...lying on the conch with my brand new iPad. Anyone else with me? does it not have spell check? seriously jealous. We don't even quite know when it will be released in the uk yet.... What I want to know is can I tether it to my iPhone or do I have to buy the 3g?

Ha. This conch ain't so comfy actually. But yes, it spell checks just the same as the intuitive based iPhone OS system does..which is spot on IMO the vast majority of the time. Regarding tethering via an iPhone, there's clearly no way in hell Apple/AT&T would allow it. But if they manage to unlock the iPad, which is an inevitability I'd think, it's certainly within reason. The beauty of the the 3G version is that it's a prepay based pay as you go system. You won't have an additional charge on your ATT bill or a separate statement all together. So, you'll only start accruing charges when you out of wifi range. Personally, I figure 9 times out of 10 I'll be using it lounging on the couch or whatever within range of a wifi connection. And for me, it's worth the extra $130 for the option to be able to use it on the road or that other 10% of the time I need a 3G signal for internet purposes. So I spend an extra $100 or so a year for those few instances I'm completely out of range. No big deal IMO. As such, I plan on buying a 3G version in a month and hand this on down to my sister. She was such a naysayer initially...like the iPhone. But now that she's seen it, of course she wants one...bad...like the iPhone. ::above not typed on an iPad .. though it's way more impressive that I had thought and I was incredibly skeptical from the jump that I'd be throwing the thing at the wall due to the touchboard::

just trying desperately to find a reason to buy this device, other than the the fact that i'm lazy and it would be nice to surf the web on the couch or in bed... I have a feeling you - along with most of those resistant for whatever reason at the moment - will be coming around much sooner than you'd expect I love the thing and I was deeply uncertain myself as well. I don't play video game at all anymore, yet some of these touch based strategy games - Plants vs Zombies and Flight Control are the two I threw in the towel and paid for (and are well worth it!) - had me up until the wee hours of the night playing. Pretty impressive, addictive, and all around fun stuff. highbrow.. You should check out those two games if you're feeling saucy and anxious throw down a few bucks on a game or two, like I was. Plants vs Zombies is badass. Next up for me...Geometry Wars. Other must have freebies include the Netflix app, so you can stream their entire online library without having to download a single movie..as long as you have an account. Just amazing! The Bloomberg iPad version if you do any trading. The BBC and NPR apps for free solid news coverage. Accuweather for a super clean and free weather forecaster. If you're not a giz reader, just check this link.. gizmodo.com/5508756/ipad-app-review-marathon-live?skyline=true&s=iA very solid, straightforward breakdown of all the worthwhile launch day apps, free or otherwise.

I'm still struggling to see the point of the ipad to be honest. I like the gadget-yness of it, I've had three iphones and love the touch screen so I completely see the attraction there, but that's about where it stops for me. Currently I've got a mac laptop, it allows me to watch movies, listen to itunes, play games (Bioshock2 at the moment) use VLC, watch TV via a slingbox, work on projects with Adobe CS4, Office, etc. It also has a webcam and mic so is great with skype or any other IM programme. All the browsers available to me utilize the flash plug-in so I'm never shut out of sites. If I want to I can take it in the car and tether it wirelessly to my jailbroken iphone which is on an unlimited data plan so costs me nothing. I wish they'd put a full sized sim slot in the ipad and given it phone capabilities. This is what put me off the most. I also wish the OS for the ipad had been more like OSX, that it was more like a computer than a toy to watch movies on and check email. Archos have done it with a windoze 7 OS. Surely apple could have done something similar. I feel like they rested on their laurels slighty and simply ported the iphone OS to a bigger interface. At the moment, if I was in the market for a new, small, innexpensive machine to run OSX, watch movies, check mail and whatever programmes I want, I'd go ffor the Dell mini 10v, then follow the following instructions to load Snowleopard on it and voila mac netbook for £250!!! gizmodo.com/5389166/how-to-hackintosh-a-dell-mini-10v-into-the-ultimate-snow-leopard-netbook

I'm waiting for the iPeriod to come out to justify such purchase. But as I was wlking to WonderCon, the store in SF had a huge line outside of it... And I'd rather put this $$$ towards art. But if you have it and love it, that's awesome. I love the feeling of breaking into a new gadget.

Lowpro I also broke down and purchased flight control and it is super addictive and love playing it, i have landed 78 planes and I love it tells me how other people are doing and how far away they are. The more I play with the IPAD the more I am liking it. As I said I literally purchased to use to watch movies on flights and so on, however now I will be traveling on Thursday to NYC for vacation and see no real need to bring my laptop as it does it all. I will most likely break down and get the 3g model or the new HTC phone one or the other which will serve as internet for it. Ibook is great as well the number of free books is amazing

i must say it is verry tempting. if anyone out there has a macbook pro and an ipad it would be great if you could give me a screen vs screen comparison (a rough idea would do). if the ipad has a higher quality display than the macbook pro, that might seriously tempt me to buy one...
