Brett Amory - 'Waiting #54' - 48x24 - Acrylic on wood panel Check out a great video trailer that Brett Amory and his friend put together for his upcoming solo show with us this June: Brett talks a bit about his 'Waiting' series: The painting series entitled “Waiting” depicts the urban individual's yearning for presence and the seeming impossibility of attaining it. The paintings portray commuters in transit immersed in either a quiet, even hopeful state or, alternately, an anguish of unfulfilled anticipation. At first, the series, begun in 2001, depicted travelers waiting underground. But as the paintings evolved, the people ceased to be exclusively travelers, and began to emphasize figures selected from anonymous snaphots of city streets. Although the experience of waiting remains, the perception of it has changed from one of mundane task to one leavened with transcendence. The series has also charted the evolution of an artist—the reductive elements of the compositions provide an outward echo of the inner states of the figures. By reducing the elements of the painting as far as possible, a frozen moment is extended. Lastly, I have developed favored motifs in the series, a kind of visual music, such as repetition of a human image, to show not only the passage of time but of the human being through it.

Sounds good Sven... the new ones are looking really tight from Brett. Around a half dozen pieces in this show. Brett will be in our 5 Year Anniversary show this Nov and also down in Miami with us this Dec. A 3-person show is on tap for early 2011 in our main gallery as well.

just looking at your flickr set andrew - what is the deal with the computer screen next to brett's workstation? does he make a photoshop composite before he paints? can't quite figure this out!

It's his photo reference - he shoots all his own reference pics around the Bay area... he'll also post pics of the work in progress on his screen to get a feel for where it's been and where he wants to take things... that video trailer he posted a week back or so really shows his proces of building a piece up to almost photo realism standards before deconstructing it and coming up with the final piece. Just in case: and another cool one to check out: www.sourharvest.com/2010/02/25/2493/

Advance look at another finished piece from Brett Amory's 'The Waiting Room' Brett Amory was recently interviewed by Juxtapoz.com and today they also posted a great studio visit with the artist as he gets ready to make the trip down to Los Angeles this week. “In a culture where newborns are weened on iPhones and adderall, Brett Amory calls attention to our generation’s impatience epidemic. How often do you see a waiting line full of calm, contemplative individuals? Brett observes these uncomfortable pauses with camera in hand and oil on the brain. In his paintings, the environment strips away to reveal a lonely soul searching for the next distraction.” - JUXTAPOZ.com Check out the Juxtapoz ‘Back Talk’ feature with Amory here: juxtapoz.com/Features/back-talk-with-brett-amoryCheck out Juxtapoz’ studio visit with Amory here: www.juxtapoz.com/Features/studio-visit-x-video-with-brett-amory-indulging-in-contemplationBrett arrives Wed morning with all the work for 'The Waiting Room'. Can't wait! Things are really coming together hot off the heels of our huge Art Walk show. Ekundayo has already arrived in the gallery and started his installation yesterday and pulled an all-nighter getting the foundation of his install in place. He's putting together a stunner of a show. Will be posting some pics later this evening here of his process thus far. Look for an interview on Juxtapoz.com tomorrow from Dayo as well and a feature in the next issue of the magazine as well.
