Exclusive interview with MCA / Evil Design
LTD Tee: What was your inspiration or concept behind the artwork submitted to LTD Tee? How did this artwork come to life?
MCA / Evil Design: The LTD Trash Clops punk was inspired by the stuff that inspires all my designs, things like Holiday in Cambodia, Lieutenant 'Lefty' Enright, Geraldo getting hit with a chair, Rip Torn, that little old guy that was Benny Hill's side-kick, Mr.T, Shaft, Dolemite, Real Deal, Superfly, Foxy Brown, Neil Diamond, What's New Pussy Cat, Deputy Dawg, The San Diego Padre's Chicken, Marty Scorscesse, Bobby Deniro, Junk Yard Dog, J.J. Jackson, Pineapple Now'n'Laters, Kareem Abdul Jabar in the movie Airplane, Paul Reubens at the movies, Mr. Green Jeans, Dr. Hook's 'Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk', The Banana Splits, Broby, Darby Crash, Public Enemy, Donald Duck swearing in duck language, Anton L., Good Times, The Three Men and a Baby Boy, Rappin' Rodney, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Edith Massey, Flounder, Mushmouth, Gary Coleman, Tootie, Jack Tripper's friend Larry, Ozzy, Lux Interior, Earth, Wind & Fire, Harvey Keitel in The Bad Lieutenant, NWA, Female Trouble, that 'Where's the Beef?' lady, Raging Bull, Prison tattoos, Larry, Daryl & Daryl, Shemp, Jeff Spicoli, Chris Farley, Ted from Mary Tyler Moore, Ol'Dirty Bastard, Bruce Lee, The Fat Boys, Car Wash, Froggy from The Little Rascals and Hot Buttered Soul.
Basically, he's the mutated version of the kids hangin' out back of the worst convenience store in yer town.
This particular design came to life one night as I was half asleep, trying to keep my eyes open to do one more drawing & all of a sudden I got slapped up side the head, startled I looked down & saw him laughing at me from my sketch book... ( now he's your problem!)
LTD Tee: What artists or websites do you find inspiring? Where do you draw inspiration from? What is your favorite artwork (either your own or someone else’s)?
MCA / Evil Design: Artists I find inspiring include Gary Panter, Barry McGee, George Gately, Big Daddy Ed Roth, JK5, Henry Darger, Os Gêmeos, Niko Stumpo, Sergio Aragonés, Ben Jones, Blu, Le Merde, Matt Furie, Chuck Jones, Kaws, Magmo, Notorius AEA, John Pound, Steve Powers, Raymond Pettibon, Futura, Dr. Suess & tons more.
I draw inspiration from these and from all aspects of life, stuff like I mentioned above - it's all a big mess in yer head & all you can do is try to make your own spin on it. I never really thought of a favorite piece of artwork, so I guess i don't have just one.. as far as my own stuff, of course when a new character is created & it just 'works' - that's the best.
LTD Tee: What is your favorite medium to work in and why?
MCA / Evil Design: A regular ol'sketch book or copy paper & a Uniball or Micron pen, that's pretty much the way to go for me... I work best with no pressure, just relax, mess around & draw & these things fit right into that mind set, that's how I get my best results.
LTD Tee: Any tips for aspiring artists?
MCA / Evil Design: Draw every day.
LTD Tee: What is your core belief or ideology? What is something you would like to share, or think everyone should know?
MCA / Evil Design: Some days ya get chickens, some days ya get feathers - you just gotta keep workin'!
LTD Tee: Anything else?
MCA / Evil Design: Thanks for supporting Evil!
