That's too funny. I don't necessarily support or like to see this sort of activity. But I also tend towards the camp that thinks Thierry's work is unacceptably derivative in nature, even if it's a bizarre social experiment that's gone horribly successful and even if a very small percentage of his recycled concepts and referenced imagery produces decently appealing work. I also agree with the skepticism over the apparent selling out and overall success of his shows as being at least in part manufactured and manipulated by the artist himself. I especially question the most recent auction results when there seems to be a healthy supply of unsold work and commission opportunities readily available directly from the artist via a simple email. Plus, I love Trusto's work. So I approve of this..I think..if only because these MBW pieces, even more so than a typical street artists piece, were way more for advertising purposes than artistic..though I suppose there's definitely nothing artistic about this Trusto work either..so I'm torn..

Interesting thing I found out about Trustocorp's signs. A friend of mine works for the city of Philadelphia and the city ordered the signs to be taken down. Over 50 signs were taken down and employees were able to take them from the "to be trashed pile." Interesting how that kind of street art was accepted/rejected.
Anyone know how long these stay up in NYC??

Anyway, I also read somewhere that some signs (before this show) are usually salvaged by city council and given away. But i think its good to own one or two sometime.

"so, the signs were $800 in editions of 10 i heard.... seems a lot, esp when some have been issued previously?" Don't quote me on this but I think there are little differences in those issued in the past as opposed to this show, For example all the images I have seen of the last show the signs themselves have a "just pulled of the street" look, while this edition they look like they were just pulled of the factory belt so to speak.

The signs from the Brooklyn Brothers were from a different "edition" than this batch. They were hand weathered, whereas these won't be. They were $800 at the NYC show as well. Initially, I was a bit taken aback when I saw some of the same designs previewed for this show. I really grilled the gallery about if there was a set edition then and whether they'll be remade etc. Clearly, Tristan and crew hadn't thought the collecting end of things through. After conferring with the artists at my request, and I'm sure others that wanted to support the show, I was informed however many were sold during the show would be made and wouldn't be remade. I was satisfied with that and grabbed a few. When I saw them included here again, I asked G88 and they said these wouldn't be weathered. So that's a little reassuring for anyone that grabbed something before. Also, the pieces they put up on the street are plastic with stickers overtop so that they can be replaced on the cheap when they are taken down by the city. I went to salvage one in Philly a few months back, as ultimately they will all be taken down and disposed. While I was as nonchalantly as possible going at it with various tools right at rush hour (not the best time), a person living on the street walked by and asked what I was doing and said she loved it. I said I was cleaning up the neighborhood and that stuff like this shouldn't be tolerated After arguing her case further and really seeming to be let down, I gave up and walked away. The fact that other random folks on the block not only noticed but appreciated it was reason enough to leave it be. It's gone now, of course, probably in dump headed to a landfill somewhere. But oh well. They're nearly impossible to take down without a blow torch anyway. After the nut is locked onto the bolt, they heat it up and bend down the tip of the bolt so the nut can't be unscrewed without straightening it back out.

thanks for that explanation lowpro - hadn't realised that the ny signs were 800 too. these are some real cool pieces, and i wouldn't have minded picking one up myself but the price put me off.
i saw trusto putting some of these up last year in miami, so understand what you mean about how difficult they are to take down. btw, the bolts aren't heated through after the lock nut is put in place. it's bent with a real nifty hand action. each sign goes up very quickly!

You've officially deflated any sense of strength I thought I had I tried for the life of me to bend the thing back into place. I definitely didn't have the right tools to maximize leverage. But I assumed they were heated up. I was going to go back with my bolt cutter, as they weren't tight and could've slide in between the pole and the nut. Would've taken it right off. But I thought I'd leave it be. Here's an image of the NYC ones to give a sense of the distressing. Makes them that much more compelling to me. But I hear ya on the cost. I didn't think twice about it for some reason. But for whatever reason, these things really piqued my interest. Thought they were a very unique way to target the streets with a message. Plus, I pulled a hefty discount, and a free Bankos box, out of the gallery for grabbing a few. And here's another..

Id do the same though if i know its worth in galleries. Still, this batch of works is worthy collecting......

Just a heads up... the bottles are an open edition and run from $20 to $50 (for the boxes). I don't think that they were taking orders over the phone/online since I could see them being a nightmare to deal with in terms of S&H. But if anyone wants to inquire by calling G1988 about placing orders, I would be willing to help out by picking up, packing, and getting them to you. I'm a solid mule and don't mess around.

The collective recently placed some of their own tabloids on magazine racks in Hollywood, Manhattan, Williamsburg, LAX and JFK. Going to give one of these bad boys away here.
