Thanks for the comments on the new work from FFDG! This is a 10 foot long canvas I am working on for the October show at Jonathan LeVine. I will have around 9 additional paintings including this one, and there will be a group of drawings in the smaller space. I will be posting show updates mostly on Facebook and the JK forum. Most likely there will be a print release for this show. Thanks again for the comments and feedback on my work. Best, Josh

I like that he opted for a large unified canvas as opposed to panels. awesome!

I knew this had to happen eventually: After months of looking and admiring, I finally caved and bought The Call I and Sowers. The former is already on the wall (standard black frame with black backdrop, no big deal), but I'm still waiting on the Sowers. Currently contemplating to take down my many-small-original-drawings wall down after 1.5 years in the current composition and switch to big-bright-and-white... mmh...

For those of you not watching Josh Keyes forum (kinda dead between shows)... Two things are happening, one it's his birthday and two an original work that is 18x24 and made in 2008 is on ebay right now and the high bidder is at 14k (with the seller confirming that the high bidder appears to be legit). What do you guys think of this price, and how it may affect his pricing in the future. His last show, all 30x40 works sold for 12k, and the big Sowers piece sold for 30k. And if you are interested, the link to ebay is here (also note, the seller states they used to have a gallery, and own 9 other original works). cgi.ebay.com/Josh-Keyes-Original-painting-Reservation-2-NO-RESERVE-/280722969701$14,100 with one hour left. This will be interesting... Does it mean anything if the top bidder has a 100% bid history?

20,100!!! That is quite the result for the seller, donĀ“t hope this will effect his prices too much cause then the last hope of getting a Keyes will be gone for me.

If this is legit, that makes things very interesting for the Keyes market. In all honesty, it is not terribly surprising. I personally valued the A grade 18x24 images at 18-20k. I always really liked this piece, but never considered it a 20k image, but apparently the market says it is!! Good old supply and demand. Also, looking back on Josh's shows over the past few years, I always loved this show personally. A lot of good work came from the OKOK Exhibition and I think it holds up with everything thereafter.

Certainly interesting as it's the only actual desirable painting from Josh to hit Ebay in a while although I don't keep up with it generally. Didn't expect it to go so high though...

It is depressing to know that the prices on the secondary market are so far out of my reach

Good price for the seller, can't imagine this one off sale will effect the price of originals from source to that extent, although I'd expect to see a slight increase for paintings in the Migration show from the last two. This is expected as Josh's profile continues to rise.

Not surprised in the least..and really don't think there is anything shifty about the result. The disparity between primary prices and true value has always been massive. But this certainly reinforces my sentiments and provides confirmation for the skeptics.

the only thing that i find surprising about this auction is that it actually finished on ebay. what would the fees be on this?? Using a fee calculator it comes out like this: Total eBay Fees: $445.00 Total Paypal Fees: $583.20 It will be interesting to see if other Keyes OGs pop up on ebay now as this auction went so high.

Since everyone just expressed how "noone" would have valued this as high as it went for, this is just the explanation. Take away the fees and the seller still got way more than in private sale where noone would have given more than 15k...

Since everyone just expressed how "noone" would have valued this as high as it went for, this is just the explanation. Take away the fees and the seller still got way more than in private sale where noone would have given more than 15k... i think in this case though the ebay and paypal fees are of no importance to the buyer - just the price he or she is willing to pay / value the buyer prescribes to the piece. ebay is just a mechanism for selling, and whether the sale was private or on ebay in this instance the buyer valued this piece at 20k with presumably 1 or 2 others just behind this figure. I always thought this was indeed one of josh's strongest bodies of work, and this piece is not one of the strongest from the show. i'd see this as the secondary market saying 18x24 pieces are indeed 20k pieces. and for particularly strong 18x24 pieces the figure would be higher than 20k. i doubt it will affect primary prices too much though. as spenie says though, prices will undoubtedly be higher than last time around. i'd hazard a guess at 14500 for 30x40 pieces primary. the show would have still sold out ten times over at this price point.

I am not surprised they chose to use eBay, the amount of sales threads I have seen where stuff has been 'sold' or 'on hold' only to be available again is unreal. People seem to promise to buy, then change their mind all the time.
At least with eBay there is a certain expectation that when you win, you have to pay, and it's an easy way to sell where there is a large audience and you don't have to deal individually with a myriad of requests and emails. You stick it on, advertise it, and let it run.

I have so many thoughts about this sale, mostly negative. Firstly, I find it disturbing to see these sales occur by so called art collectors. I look at a lot of art on ebay and this guy has been around for years. OK, so what? As a collector, how do you justify selling a piece 2-3 years after buying it, for 5x the amount you payed. I know the an$wer to that que$tion $o no need to reply. I personally feel that most these "art collectors" that sell on ebay are nothing more than speculators that in reality care noting for the art they purchase and only see it as a commodity. Suppose that everyone who purchased a Keyes OG in the last 5 years put them on ebay, what would happen? Sure if you are a Keyes collector it is comforting to know that you have made a good investment, if that's the reason you buy art. Go ahead and bash me now.
