Just curious, how come you mentioned he wasn't popular around these parts? Oh, just kinda a joke because even though alot of the collectors I talk to have similar lists of favorite artists, not one of them have brendan on their lists. I think he has alot of fans, just for some reason not with people I hang out with. Also, there was the whole fiasco behind his red sour release that had people upset but most people don't blame brendan for that. I wasn't implying that he wasn't popular as a person because he's real nice... By the way he has a show coming up at Little Cakes that I'm looking forward too in June. Theme is gardening which will be perfect for his "organic" work.

In addition, your collection of Monroe's is great. Hopefully he will have something small I can afford at the Little Cakes Show, as a piece of his has always been one of my missions.

I hope he has something like this since the theme seems to fit. One of my all time favs but the owner wants $4250 for it and it's only 8 x 13"! Pretty steep so couldn't bring myself to do it.

that is a really good example, however it does seem a bit much. As much as I like him, I am sorry to say I have never seen one in person. Do the pictures generally do them justice? - or are they the type that the textures, color and detail just don't come through on photo's?

A little fun pic after I decided to move one of his paintings above the fireplace. Would love to display it this way but afraid of earthquakes and not sure how to secure the sculptures. Maybe wires with ends nailed into wall?

Nice display of the painting and sculptures.
Yeah, nails & wires sounds like a good idea.

That's what I was thinking before I even finished reading your post, clear wires strapped around the back legs of the "bug" looking one and maybe under the arms for "the sitter" one tied to hooks. Another option might be some sort of sticky putty that doesn't damage the wood or mantle and can be removed without to much fuss. I'm only posting because I like the way you have it displayed, looks real nice.

^^^
Is that a different piece than the previous image you posted? Or was the first image posted a detail of the above painting?
Regardless, I too agree that this new direction is a bit disconcerting. Not a fan at all. Undoubtedly just a phase and we will see a return to the Brendan Monroe we all know and love....hopefully, sooner than later.

Please Brendan, bring back the spineys, sours, etc... But, maybe it's more lucrative to appeal to more of the fine arts customers. I hope he knows what he is doing...

I do agree that he is probably attempting to expand a fan base and that perhaps his original stylings were a little to obscure for some outside the "lowbrow" scene. But I find these even less compelling in structure, less provocative in content, and even less an example of his fine painting skills. It certainly is watered down, however. So if that's what the fine art collectors are looking for, and that's what he's going for, I hope they also find them too bland and uninteresting, and he's nudged along back into the realms of sours and spinnys.

I was thinking that was one of the reasons to not get typecast into the "low brow" field. I have heard several artists talk about how they want to have some "crossover" appeal. Especially when you consider the market for art. I mean we get all crazy when we talk about audrey or craola prices for example... But I walk into some random gallery at bergamot station and see stuff i would never buy in a million years on the walls all sold, and the prices are like 30K, 40K, 50K... That's when I realize our little world is not that inclusive after all. All the big boys buy "fine art." Now, Brendan doesn't seem like that kinda artist, maybe it's just a natural progression.
