Here's an interesting piece that showed at the NEXT art fair in Chicago with the Kinsey/Desforge Gallery. Looks like Jeff is trying some new things.

Jeff,
I love your work and I always excited when I see you trying new things. Even when (or especially when) they don't really work for me personally: but rainbows suck! (jk, rainbows just aren't for me)
I fall asleep looking a "December to Rememer" (you spell like me) and I love it more now than the day it arrived at our home.
Always rememer that you inspire your fans and we are happy to brave the twist and turns of your imagination. Even when they make us dizzy (or happier than we want to be).
I still want that Walker Toy. I hope someone can get it made for you one day. (shameless plug: super7 would be happy to give it a try)
I can't wait to see whats next.

Also includes essays by Jeff Soto, David Choe, and Mark Murphy. “Storm Clouds” features a hard bound, archival edition, that matches the size and format of the sold out, “Potato Stamp Dreams,” with over 154 pages. The standard edition features specialty printing on the cover and the Limited Edition will feature a custom printed box, signed book, with 4 archival prints and special touches. Superhero show on Thurs what superhero is that? Ha! My thoughts exactly, my friend. I was so excited when I read Jeff's name on the roster for this show, expecting him to knock it out of the park with a nostalgic superhero homage piece....like the others in the show. I immediately contacted Mark Murphy about the painting. He said Jeff was still finishing it up (and this was on Tuesday), but that he could probably offer it to me if I were interested. So I eagerly anticipated the next email from Mark with my imagination about what sort of former iconic character he'd use running wild, only to finally receive a damn butterfly. Ha. But I was definitely a little disappointed. For some reason, I get the sense he was rushed in creating it perhaps. Plus, he must've entirely missed the memo regarding the theme of the show...just kidding.

i went to the superhero show, and i gotta be honest- as much as i love seeing batman ears and funny drawings of ironic/nostalgic superheroes, it can get a bit gimmicky.
i used to not be a big fan of soto, but over the last few years, i have grown a profound respect for him as a painter with his own vision.
with this show, this piece reaffirmed my faith in him. i found it courageous that he maintained his vision, and still catered to the theme. he created an image that i think, contains the essence/idea of 'superhero', rather than painting a cheesy spiderman with his head in black clouds.
i say, good for jeff.

Well that's good to hear. I bet it was nice in person. If you've been around the various lowbrow boards long enough, you'll know that I'm an absolute Soto freak. His is, and has always been, my favorite artist. While it seems many collectors are still warming up to the artistic direction he's taken since the Levine Storm Clouds show, I commend Jeff for continuing to experiement and for having the fortitude to resist stylistic compacency. So we're in complete agreement there. And while I fully agree about a superhero-based painting potentially being gimmicky, I guess I just view these thematic exhibits, especially this one, as an excuse to go that ironic route and have fun living in the past...if just for a moment and a single painting. So that was my thinking and I think the only reason I was a bit let down. I also was waiting on the edge of my seat in anticipation for a day or two awaiting the image, so that might've played into it as well.

nice, lowpro.
yeah i mean, anyone who knows me, knows that i love batman- and a batman painted by jeff soto, i think would have been crazy/hilarious. but.. well, i've said.
the piece was a lot more impressive in person, btw... it's so hard for me to know whether i like pieces until i see them in person nowadays... sometimes art has a real presence on the web or on a postcard and in person are so, hum. and the opposite is also true obviously-
but the point is, this one was really nice in person, my second 'live' soto painting.

Just kidding. But I too am a Batman fanatic and with The Dark Knight rocking the world last weekend I think if everyone had done a Batman-themed piece at this show there still wouldn't have been enough. Ha. it's so hard for me to know whether i like pieces until i see them in person nowadays... sometimes art has a real presence on the web or on a postcard and in person are so, hum. and the opposite is also true obviously- So very true.
