Agreed, love it! For some reason I think the bulbous nature of his current paintings would go down HUGE with the Japanese market.

I agree too. This piece is all you can ask for in a compact Soto piece. I love the rainbow and the clear night setting of the desert.

Sweet, also will get it because of Ms Early. I wonder if Jeff has ever considered any more vinyl from his newest works?

A different feeling Soto from his stolenspace show upcoming, and much stronger and more interesting than the bulk of his RAM pieces were to me.

My blog has more info on my upcoming London show- jeffsotoart.blogspot.com/2009/04/jeff-soto-inland-empire-at-stolenspace.html Here's the basics: Jeff Soto ‘The Inland Empire’ 14th May - 07th June 2009 StolenSpace, London So for those of you that have been to London or live there- what are the must see destinations? London Eye looks pretty cool... Oh, here's a better image of that painting... "Nature's Wrath", 12" x 12" acrylic on wood, 2009.

Really looking forward to this show. Another very solid, nightscape piece... ...and another that appears to be from the show... Taken from blog entry... "This show will feature over twenty new paintings on wood panel and paper, as well as large-scale outdoor installations. The opening will see the release of a limited edition hand pulled screen print and Soto will be signing copies of his newly published book ‘Storm Clouds’." Good stuff! And other good info in the above link, so check it out.

I thought Jeff Soto was LOWBROW. Probably featured a DOZEN times in JUXTAPOZ. I am out touch, I believe.

Nature's Wrath is a cool piece, Jeff. Reminds me a little bit of Aurel Schmidt's work - just kind of a surface comparison -not saying you stole that style or anything negative.

I thought Jeff Soto was LOWBROW. Probably featured a DOZEN times in JUXTAPOZ. I am out touch, I believe. I'll bite... So all work in Juxtapoz = Lowbrow? I don't see myself as a lowbrow artist, however I am friends with many of them and I respect them, and show in many of the same places. I know many group me in and I'm okay with that. I don't like to be labeled or assigned to a certain group but I know people want to categorize artists for some reason. I personally think this forum should drop all the categories and just have "Contemporary Art". Really, that is what we are- contemporary artists doing what we do. For myself, I feel "Lowbrow" is too limiting, I prefer to just make the art that needs to be made regardless of how I'm labeled. There is much much more to discuss, but not in here and not with all you internet strangers... P.S. I was "featured" twice in Juxtapoz, in 2004 and last month. But- both times got the cover which is kinda cool. Not too many of us have had multiple covers in the first 100 issues (I will not lie, it's a slight ego boost!!). I just never saw Juxtapoz as being entirely Lowbrow, especially the last couple of years... TheWalrus- Never seen Aurel Schmidt's work, wow! Thanks for sharing, I'm going to check it out more....

i must admit, i have a real distaste for the term 'lowbrow'. it conjures up images of hot rods and monsters for me. that's pretty much not what 99% of the artists discussed on here are about.

Hey Jeff, does that SF/LA piece have anything to do with the Giants and Dodgers? The colors you used for the letters are the correct team colors.
And if so...why is SF on top of LA? Travesty!

HELLO JEFF. My comment was perhaps reactionary. Not meant to brand you in a derogatory way. I should have elaborated on the simple thought behind it. I think your name along with a couple others glaringly stood out when I clicked on the Contemporary Art section.. I had expected the usual suspects like Damien Hirst to Damien Loeb, Richard Phillips to Lisa Yuskavage, Barbara Kruger to Cindy Sherman. YOUR STYLE kind of fits the sensibility of what we see featured in Juxtapoz and Hi Fructose and not what I've seen in contemporary art books. I was amused. It is all subjective. A single opinion on a remote message board far far away. OF COURSE it's not automatically "lowbrow" if featured in Juxtapoz magazine. But I know at least one museum that believes Juxtapoz is a movement unto itself I PREFER the term Pop Surrealism. Not sure what the difference between Lowbrow and Pop Surrealism is exactly. I suppose we know it when we see it. IF WE LABEL EVERYTHING JUST "ART" and become less discriminating, or more egalitarian about this, I think that will make it difficult for those looking to zero in on the art that reflects the sensibilities WE typically connect with. If all artists were to abandon the "labels" bestowed upon them, break ranks with the movement that has been so generous to them, then whatever momentum or cohesion this new movement may have had could dissipate, and along with it perhaps a few budding careers, and a few galleries. That would be a shame. I love a lot of it. I like the irreverence. I like the anarchic nature of it. I like the lack of pretense. There are NO RULES. Unfortunately there is much crap out there being promoted and overwhelmingly so. The few exciting things in this movement are by association sometimes degraded as a result. THE BEST ART TRANSCENDS ALL GENRES, but every artist and his or her influences have their roots somewhere. THANK YOU for personally replying to my comment

You are certainly not alone with this opinion Jeff. It's something we have considered and may someday do. There are pros and cons. I think the biggest being convenience of browsing vs. difficulty in categorizing artists when sometimes they are uncategorizable or even the idea of "labeling." More discussion on this here and here.

I've seen the pieces being hung today, and it really is a fantastic body of work.
