I first came across Emma Tooth’s paintings last year at a small gallery in York. Been hooked ever since.

She’s an interesting person, and is inspired by all things Gothic-Victoriana.
She is now represented by Lazarides in London, which is a refreshing change to their roster, and has a solo show with them in october.
She paints in a very classically informed chiaroscuro style and sets up all of her own reference photo-shoots and commissions the models herself.
Here’s a few images of her work from her Concilium Plebis (council of the ordinary people) series.

It’s interesting to see how she builds up the layers of paint to achieve the skin tones and the contrast between the light and dark.
