I'm curious about how he mixed techniques, both screen printing and Giclee. That seems like it could produce some interesting results. I imagine it's pretty expensive combining them both, anyone have any experience seeing this done?

A photo from the female photography show coming up at New Image Art. This is from a series of artist portraits from Cheryl Dunn.

A piece at the Art Los Angeles Contemporary. Anyone going or went to the fair?

That was my favorite (of the semi-affordable) pieces from Japan. It's unfortunate such quality work is drifting around unsold. Had Ooi Botos not been so unwilling to flex a wee bit on price and place work with a motivated collector, this guy might be on my walls right now. Interestingly, things seem to have a way of working themselves out in the end and it's looking like not going after this might've ended up being in my best interest.

A closer look at that Art Los Angeles Contemporary fair piece. Sounds like he might have a show at that Otero Plassart eventually. Good for socal people to finally see a show in person if it's true...

That was my favorite (of the semi-affordable) pieces from Japan. It's unfortunate his price points are too high for his market to sustain - at least at the moment - and such quality work is drifting around unsold. Had Ooi Botos (and Jose) not been so unwilling to flex a bit on price and place work with a motivated collector, this guy might be on my walls right now. Interestingly, things seem to have a way of working themselves out in the end and it's looking like not going after this might've ended up being in my best interest. what are parla's pieces selling for (or not, as the case may be) these days? really nice work though, no doubt.

Good for socal people to finally see a show in person if it's true... If not going after this stunning masterpiece is not in your best interest, I'd really like to see what is. Couldn't think of another artist I'd rather have on my walls. Prices: 6 footers $70Kish. 4 footers $50ish. 3 footers $30-40K. Watercolors $15Kish. Parla's prices might seem a bit steep right now, but we all know where he's going. In the near future we'll be looking back.

The real value in his work is actually being lucky enough to live with it. Nothing brings me more enjoyment than getting lost in it every morning before I leave the house and every evening when I return. It's been hanging well over a year now and it still gets better everyday.

Didn't a fairly large canvas piece go for $7,000 a few months ago at a charity auction? Maybe it was just a lucky purchase because other collectors weren't aware of the auction.

Didn't a fairly large canvas piece go for $7,000 a few months ago at a charity auction? Maybe it was just a lucky purchase because other collectors weren't aware of the auction. No, it wasn't a canvas. It was an older, large (30"x44") watercolors. The auction was the Ryan McGinness 50 Party's auction, which definitely flew WAY under the radar and as such is a very poor barometer for the current pricing, let alone current secondary market pricing. All pieces in the auction are supplied direct from artists and usually are offered below market value from the jump, with the event sporting an exclusive invitation only list. So, I would not use this auction as an accurate gauge of value by any stretch of the imagination. Jose did a run of 10 watercolors at the start of the year and all were placed very quickly at retail. That said, it was a steal and did throw me off when heard about the auction after the fact. Basically, it just boils down to some lucky buyer getting an extremely good deal. And while it was an undeniably good deal, I'm still way more partial to - and would be willing to pay that much more for - one of the new, 2.0 watercolor, with the tide shifting at the HK Reading Through Seeing show. The luminescence of the broad back strokes with the wild and bountiful foreground calligraphy of that batch was so refreshing and makes them so much stronger than the earlier watercolors, imo. I would kill for this piece, Word Symmetry, from HK.. And here was one, Switching States of Mind, from after the HK show in the same newer vein..

Does anyone know if there are any watercolors currently available on the market? The second piece I posted, Switching States of Mind, is amazingly still available. Adam Bryce of slamxhype showed it at his new gallery down in New Zealand, but it didn't sell. It's back in the States now and is looking for a good home. If you're serious, drop me a PM and I can get you in touch with the proper party. It's one of my favorite watercolors to date.

I stand corrected. The image I originally saw associated with it on a random blog wasn't the actual piece. Went and dug up the auction catalog to retrieve an image. It really is another incredible impressive example, despite the small image.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I love this new direction he is going. I just enjoy the fluidity of his work more with watercolors.
