Wonderful time lapse short from Coachella 2010, utilizing the ever popular and awesome tilt shift effect. Do yourself a favor and watch in HD. More than worth the 4 mins.

I just read that this effect can be achieved both optically/w lens as well as in post (digital effects). How old are these lens? I remember seeing a similar kind of effect on old MTV videos growing up... say Metallica's - The Unforgiven (no, I don't like Metallica but that's what they played on MTV growing up... btw, who made that creepy clown painting in the video?) But, I am guessing in those videos they were playing with depth of field by closing lens and moving camera away from subject (and/or viceversa)? Tilt shift makes everything look like a miniature set... pretty cool.

Wow. Just had a serious moment of nostalgia watching that. Thank you for that. Definitely watched the shit out of that back in the 90s on MTV. Such an incredible piece of work, both in film and song. Love that track. The emotion produced is unsettling. And come on, no need to deny your love for Metallica I wouldn't say I still listen to them at all anymore..though hearing this track makes me want to break back out the And Justice For All again and crank One with the volume on 11. But if you grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, Metallica has to have a special place in your heart, however small. Dudes can play and wrote some solid rock anthems. Regarding the tilt-shift, I don't know much about it. Just been seeing it more and more recently, as more shorts and viral videos employ it. I believe it's just referring to something you do in a video editing program, where I presume the shift key is involved , so this example and others are all done on the computer after filming with standard cameras and lenses. You're exactly right about the miniaturizing effect. That is more or less the intended purpose of it, to make the resulting imagery look as if it was a captured on a model toy set. Really funny to watch the little figures scurry around, especially with the speed ramped up a step. Great work.

you got me... I am a Metallica fan... no, just kidding, I did like sporting a (prob. counterfeit - since I bought it in Mexico) Mettalica 'And Justice for All' t-shirt back in the late 90s to be honest w/you... and yes, 'One' is a great song... that one and 'the one from an older album 'Sanitarium' are prob. two I couldn't stop listening to back in my golden years. back to tilt shift... I took a couple of film classes around 8-9 years ago and it is funny how these lenses were never addressed (one can also finnagle w/after effects after shooting, but I imagine the digitalized effect is somehow different) hence my curiosity to find out how old these lenses are... thanks for posting this... (I need to attend my first Coachella soon...)

The anti-focal/soft focus elements of Chris Berens' work is somewhat reminiscent of the tilt-shift.
Coachella is a must for any music lover..or any human being really. Went in 2007 when Rage reunited for the first time in years. Unfortunately, we got hung up in Vegas the nights before seeing Air at the Hard Rock and then two nights of TOOL at The Pearl at the Palms..which is hands down the finest music venue I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live music at. We were only supposed to stay for one TOOL show. But after the one, we couldn't miss the next night. Our endless hours at the blackjack tables hopped up the way only a TOOL show can enabled comped tickets and plenty of great meals, even if we all maxed out a cards and left with little to our names. Then it was a wild ride through the desert at night to make it to Coachella Valley in time for the last night of the festival, which was when Rage was headlining the main stage. Had a wonderful 4 bedroom rented house with pool and hot tube to roll up to when day broke after a night of driving at least. Proceeded to perfect my backflip without a diving board and incurred countless bruises from the bottom of the pool. Good times! Still to this day, I get offers from the Palms for 3 free nights in a suite, transportation from airport, $350 in table money and $500 in food/services all as a result of the 20+ hours spent at their tables that weekend. Kinda funny. I will take them up on their offer eventually and will still to Holdem this time.
