I started my artpassion with collecting prints. Mostly UK artists where the message seems to be the mainfactor (Banksy, Walker, Neate, etc.).
Here a few years after I´ve found myself moving on to original works and more and more US artists such as Keyes, McLennan, Wittfooth, etc. The message is still there but the visuals seems so much more detailed and in focus, where the UK scene seems more raw and street-influenced.
I know you can find street-influenced artists in the states, but still the difference is pretty evident I think.
I myself is from Denmark, so my guess is that it would be a cultural thing/understanding, but I would love to hear other´s take on these thoughts of mine.

Maybe its a matter of looking more extensively on the pool of artist out there and the 'movement' they represent. Depends on what forum you visit, books you read, subconscious preference and others.
I mean Keyes, Mc Lennan, Wittfooth could have their counterparts in the UK, but less known/advertised because 'urban art' is the scene there (but then again, if one chooses to see it that way).
US also have artist within the urban art genre, such as David Kinsey, David Choe etc.
MAybe a good idea to identify a counterpart based on style.
