1) Wikipedia doesn't say "godfather of street art" because that's your phrase. The United Street Art Association of Earth hasn't officially bequeathed that unto anyone, so, don't look for it.

2) Don't go to Wikipedia and talk about facts.

3) If you want to go back far enough, the "godfather" of street art is the first caveman to grab a stick and scrawl a stick figure -- probably with two big circles for titties -- into the dirt.

4) We don't need to go that far back: if you want to talk contemporary street art, that field is dominated by work evolved directly from stencil pieces, of which Blek is the man.

5) Just because Link Wray recorded distortion first doesn't mean he invented it, nor is he the "godfather" of rock guitar. The same thing goes here.

Well, please don't take this as any kind of assertion as to who might be the "official" godfather of street art, but here's a quotation from a 2003 Wooster Collective interview with Blek le Rat that I feel sheds some light on this subject:

"WC: How did you get started in creating art for the street?
Blek: The first stencil I made was of some little rats running along the streets. Why rats? Because rats are the only free animals living in cities, they are the last rebels of cities... I started to make figures in 1983, after having seen Hambleton's shadows in Paris.

WC: What other street artists do you most admire and why?
Blek: From the old school, I really like Richard Hambleton. This American artist from NYC was the first street artist to export his work all over the world. It was really incredible to do that in the beginning of the '80s! This guy put his shadows in every city in Europe, and so you could find them in Paris, London, Roma, Berlin etc. I never met him, but I bought one of his shadow paintings on paper in Christie's auction in NYC in 1990."

You mentioned 'The Caveman'....but the caveman didn't have
streets so there's no way he could be
the 'Godfather of Street Art'.

I never hear anyone talking about Hambleton, just Blek. And of course he was inspired to start somehow, but nobody is copying Hambleton like millions of kids (and Banksy and Shep and everyone else) are copying Blek. The people I know, they all trace themselves back to Blek, so, that's what I meant to say.

Whatever the truth is, I think we can all agree that Singletary needs his underscore key disabled.
