Yayoi Kusama's Fireflies on the Water at The Whitney was wonderful. I wish the time in the installation was more than one minute.
Im sure its many things to many people but this was how I felt.
First, it took me a moment for my eyes and my brain to connect with the surroundings. It all hit me at once and my eyes didnt focus on anything but just started scanning the room. Then, I fixated on the lights around me, following them into the mirrors where I eventually noticed there were many, many of me looking around the room. Finally my eyes started to take in the most distant lights they could find and get a bit lost in the patterns around the room... then... the door opened.
In the middle of all of it I felt like I was on a boat, my feet felt unstedy and I can understand why they give a small warning for people with vertigo.
Doing some reading before hand I felt like I was inside on of Yayoi's breakdowns where she felt a pattern engulfing everyhing and the universe collapsing.
Well worth the scheduling that it took. I decided to purchase a membership in order to expedite things for wife, daughter and I.
Higly recomended.
Also, a special treat in gallery 5M there was a bunch of Edward Hopper pieces. Hopper is my favorite dead American painter and I would highly suggest a visit.

I first experienced a Kusama "infinity room" at Gagosian 24th in 2010. It was called "Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity". Great experience that my wife and I both really enjoyed. That entire Gagosian show was excellent in keeping you off-balance, with a whole 'eye-brian' disconnection due to the searing color combined with the structure of the infinity net paintings.
I really enjoy a good whole-body art experience like a Kusama room, walking through a Serra sculpture, etc. That's why I was so bummed to miss the Doug Wheeler exhibition at Zwirner several months ago. Looked like a great one.
