Okay, don't take this the wrong way but I had an interesting conversation with Seth (Carmichael Gallery) about this yesterday. I personally don't feel like shelling out major cash-money for digital work even though I understand it takes "skills" as well. So someone like Ray Caesar printing up multiple different angles of same 3D image just doesn't do it for me although I admire his work greatly. The fact is that I own some digital art (kozyndan i love for example). Also for some reason, someone who draws first then scans and then enhances I seem to be able to accept more... I guess in the world we live in, we all own prints and its hard to seperate that from digital printouts...
That said, the main thing that bothers me is that there is a copy of the "painting" on the artists' or even other peoples' hard drives. Of course, most people would trust the integrity of the artist but it's not outside the realm of possibility for there to other "prints" out there now or at some later date.
So how do you feel about stencils? Isn't it similar? Reproducible? Personally, this was also what originally turned me off to street art but I have changed my mind a little since those early days. I really enjoy some artists' work and would probably have no problem purchasing some pieces if I found one I really loved (or had the money haha). Again it's a matter of trust I suppose. At least stencils are "hand made" although digital art is "hand made" too if you count the hand on the mouse.
i suppose this could be in the "general" section as well...
