You don't see these anymore. For good reason. Wow, that is an ugly painting. It sadness me, in a sense, to know that this was the origins of one of my favorite artists. Oh well. I suppose most great artists go through enormous style shifts over the course of their careers. I've posted before about how much I loath Naoto's use of overt, cliched psychedelic reference points in some of his piece...even today. Yet, I imagine without some experimentation with hallucinogens he wouldn't be the masterfully demented painter he is today. At least the one redeeming feature of this painting is that it still conveys a strong technical competency. It's quite intricate (and busy, in a bad way) and everything is painted cleanly. I'll just ignore this piece as being a part of Naoto's portfolio.

Hattori is a real master. It's amazing what he can do with an airbrush. Definitely has been my favorite artist for quite some time. I like his newer stuff as well as his older stuff. It's a real pleasure to have access to his mental images in such high detail.

It's amazing what he can do with an airbrush. Can anyone else confirm he uses an airbrush? I've never heard or read this, and I've tried to absorb as much of the information there is out there on him...as there isn't much. I've always been dumbfounded by his level of detail and have wondered how he does it. Quality fodder for an interview.

I don't know about these older ones, but his newer ones look way too detailed to be pure airbrush. Especially at the size they are, I don't think you could get such sharp detail with one.

Can anyone else confirm he uses an airbrush? I can't walt - and I've spoken to him a couple times in the past. Of course I didnt ask him outright if he used an airbrush but for obvious reasons, that never crossed my mind! Now I'm curious... Arent airbrushes used exclusively for fills and shading only? Jim

Of course I didnt ask him outright if he used an airbrush but for obvious reasons, that never crossed my mind! Now I'm curious.. Yeah, I talk to him quite frequently via email as well. Super generous and friendly artist! But this has never crossed my mind, and as a result never came up in our conversations. I think it's safe to assume he doesn't use them anymore. However, I could see him utilizing them in a painting like the one listed for sale in this thread. Nonetheless, please keep your eyes peeled to Arrested Motion for an interview with Naoto sometime in the near future. Because of the lack of available information about him out there, I will attempt to pick his brain dry. Should be fun and end up being a good read. And I'll be sure to ask him about the infamous airbrush internet rumor now running rampant on the intranet. Ha.

I've relisted this piece on EBay again if anyone with taste is interested. I hadn't thought of the ol' insult them into buying technique. Well played!

Thanks. I try to have a sense of humor about such things. I mean really, there's no accounting for taste whether it's mine or anyone else's.
