My wife and I will be flying out from LA to NYC sometime in Sept for a week of non-stop gallery hoping. We're looking for some advice from natives and aficionados about what areas, galleries, and museums we should be hitting up. Suggestions?

I'll gladly give you a hand. Just let me know a bit more about your tastes, your wife's patience(seriously, I know I can only push my wife so far when it comes to going out to galleries/museums) and the time you are dedicating.
Gallery shows I can update you as we get closer. Most galleries don't have their schedules posted that far in advance.
I do recommend doing 'waves'. For example, one day is Chelsea, for the galleries, Chelsea Market, maybe Morimoto for dinner, Dougnut Plant for NYC's best donuts(IMO), maybe the piers, etc. The next, hit the Upper East Side. Far fewer galleries but great ones like Skarstedt, the former L&M, Gagosian, but you have the MET(remember, admission is pay-what-you-want), the Guggenheim(which will have a James Turrell installation in September), the Whitney(a Hopper drawing exhibition), etc. Next day, midtown with MoMA which can really eat your whole day(recommendation, buy a membership. Admission is $25 per, a single membership is $80, tax-deductible, and allows you in an hour early without crowds).
I;ll work with you and get you the best experience I can.

My wife is actually the more patient of the two of us. We're both keen to spend 5-6 days on great art. I'd say our biggest interests are with contemporary art. We both like Cubism, Futurism, Pop-Surrealism, Fantasy Art, Graffiti, and illustration, but we have fairly broad tastes and are always looking for something interesting.
Doing it in waves is smart. We have the NYC City Pass which gives us full access to the MET, Guggenheim, and MoMA. We'll probably use that as an excuse to move around day to day. Thanks for the advice, and I'd love to here about up and coming shows.

Cool, that definitely makes things easier.
When I am upper east side, I am looking at:
The MET the Guggenheim the Whitney the Park Avenue Armory the Asia Society(will have a show on Iranian modern art in September) the Neue Gallery the Frick Collection(more masterpieces per square foot than anywhere else in the world)
Galleries Gagosian Madison Avenue Luxemborg & Dayan Mnuchin Gallery(formerly L&M) Dominique Levy(the other former half of L&M) Acquavella Gallery Eykyn Maclean Skarstedt Castelli Gallery Craig F. Starr Gallery Hauser & Wirth(69th street)
and there are a ton more, but those are the ones I usually hit.

We always make a point to grab a crepe from Bar Suzette in Chelsea Market while spending the day gallery hopping in the area.

In NYC on business this week but will get a free day either Thurs or Fri. Any suggestions would be more than welcome.
Staying fairly central (W 45th St) so looking for art (galleries, exhibits and street pieces etc) and also any cool places to chill/dine.

Thought this might be a cool place for my first post! Been hanging out on a couple other boards and decided to sign up/take the pill here too~
I'm curious/excited about the art stuff happening in DUMBO... I believe I got wind of a show either this weekend or next, throughout the neighborhood. Anyone know more? Going?
Nice to be here - looking forward to learning & hearing more, and making some friennnnnnds.
