The best breed of dog in the world IMO! All the brilliance of the larger hound breeds without the howling and drooling with hearts the size of lions! The dog I had growing up was a black and tan short-haired female named Gretel - to this day, I've never came across a more intelligent, loving, well-mannered overall fun dog When I spoke to her as a boy, I swore she understood me! Its been MANY years since she passed and I still miss her and think of her often. Tara and I have been thinking of finally getting a dog and there will be no decisions - it will be a Doxie! Yours are good-looking - stocky with more bold features like Gretel was - some I've seen over the years are too skinny with more "pointy" features. I don't like that type ... Since you and I are from the same neck of the woods, you don't happen to know a good breeder by chance? I usually prefer to buy from someone who's pet had puppies and were raised in thier home. jIm

I have pictures of me in my baby crib with my 1st Doxie "Fritzie" standing on the edge of the crib keeping everyone away. I have had a Dachshund by my side ever since then. (they even go to the gallery with me) Id check Dachshund Rescue before anything else, lots of Doxie's waiting for good homes. Be ready for heart breaking stories when you go to the page below. dachshund-rescue.org/index.phpWe have 6 Doxie's here on 4 acres with 4 from Dachshund Rescue. Duncan & Barney are my boys, Duncan is from a breeder in Orlando and Barney was found on a walk. I look for ones that are not bugged eyed and skinny which means they have been inter breed to much & might have health problems. (Uncle Daddy) I also prefer Standards to Mini's but both are sweet. Jake & Elwood on this page are handsome black & tans. (also Love Tavi) www.almosthomerescue.org/available/available.htm

(they even go to the gallery with me) Thats funny Tom - literally every picture of me when I was a boy, has Gretel in the shot as well (almost all family pics period). She was literally part of everything we did. Every year we would go on a family summer vacation to Wisconsin for a week - by the time she was 3 years old she knew that when we were packing the van the day before, what that MEANT! She would stay in the van as we packed it all day so affraid we would leave her behind somehow - finally at night we would drag her in the house and she would then lay by the front door til we left in the morning. When we were ready to leave and would put her in the van, I swear that dog had a SMILE on her face! ;D a side note: when I was 7 and wanted a dog my parents had just bought thier first house, my sister was just born - so things were very tight. The way I got my parents to agree was to tell them I would pay half (I'm sure they didnt need it but my dad liked that idea). I literally broke my piggy bank and had $20 - they wanted $50 for her and I asked if I could have her for $40 (the guy couldnt resist). Best and FIRST $20 I ever spent to this day! jIm ps - the peope we got her from had both the "parents" as pets - the males name was FRITZ!
