I'd love some insight into why a drawing like this is so sought after and expensive? I've never really understood Barry McGree's work so I'm definitely naive to his market. I know that, for whatever reason, he does has a huge following. I take it your more or less buying the name with a piece like this? Or is the line work really that impressive to you to justify the price? I take it this is a trademark character, but they look so similar. Not much originality infused.

I agree and have wondered the same things .The second piece looks almost identical as the first, the first looks like it just has a bit more detail with the white lines, writing, and striped on the hat.

I met Barry, back in the mid 80's, in Oakland. I think people who are familiar with his street work can relate to his gallery work. Alot of the characters in his pieces aren't anything new. I can trace back the same or similar characters on the streets of Oakland and San Francisco from the mid 80's to late 90's. Why is his work so sought after and expensive? I remember when you can buy his painted bottles for about $500. I think when the ebay vultures started selling the same stuff for 200 to 300% markup, the galleries got hip to those prices and started their own trend. Just from visiting couple of his auctions, most of his collectors buy his stuff just because he's "Barry McGee", not because they have a great appreciation for street art. I love his stuff and I know where he's coming from - the stories behind his characters, the street scene installations, etc. but I can't afford any of his work unless he's throwing a show under one his aliases where the prices are a bit cheaper.
