charitybuzz assure me that they worked with UPS to keep the shipping costs as low as possible and $855 is what they were quoted to ship my two pieces. I am right to think this is dementedly high aren't I?! I've had plenty of larger, heavier, and much higher dollar work shipped from the U.S. in the past for a tiny fraction of that quote. Yeah, dementedly high! Not even close to reality. I had a few works shipped to Sydney which i assumed was heavier/ larger than the one which i got during the auction. Juxta/ Charity BUzz charged me 680USD for shipping alone for my piece which was 24x 34 inches and weighed 9 kilos, but i didnt have a choice that time. That made me shy away from bidding in the second wave! I hope they can give other shipping company options.

these shipping prices are insane. you guys should insist that they grab a dose of reality and investigate other options. question for those that received items previously - were they bespoke crated or sent in cardboard boxes? just to throw in a reality check, i had a piece shipped from la to the uk earlier this year. canvas was 55x40 inches and was sent in a bespoke wooden crate. the total cost was 510 dollars, including the cost of having the crate made, which was so sturdy that i could have used it to bury myself in.

This is insane. Mike I can't believe they have the nerve to charge you that. Anything I've received from overseas has come via an art shipping company, was much larger and packed in a crate like Sven described and for significantly less than they are asking you to pay.

' received my item from Juxtapoz/ Charity BUzz the same way. Nothing too exciting to have paid the amount they charged me. Well, quite expensive lesson for me to remember before trying to bid again in JUx' s next auction.

Sorry to harp on about this but it's really aggrieving me.
Received my two pieces this afternoon and, after recovering from a further £46 COD charge on top of the $855 shipping, I had a look at the packaging and checked weights.
The larger piece is in a cardboard box measuring 44" x 30" x 5" and which weighs 19lbs, the smaller is in a 24" x 26" x 4" cardboard box weighing 6lbs, neither of which would seem to justify the excessive shipping cost.
However, under the shipping weight is something called DWT are those are, respectively 77.6lbs and 25.3lbs. I'm guessing that DWT might be Declared Weight? Which, I presume, would be the weight charged for by UPS? And which might account for the insane costs.
Before I pursue this further with Jux/charitybuzz could I ask if anyone can clarify the actual meaning of DWT rather than my 'see what I want to see' interpretation?

I'm thinking it means dimensional weight. For some larger packages some shippers will calculate the weight based on the dimensions rather than the actual weight, sounds like thats what they did for your larger box as the three dimensions provided add up to the 77+ pounds they are billing you for. Doesn't always make sense (and clearly doesn't in this case as the box weighs 1/4 what they are billing for) and it costs the person paying the shipping bill more but thats what they do.

Thanks.
Well that sucks pretty hard then and would explain the ludicrous shipping charges folk have been experiencing.
I'll email both charitybuzz and jux because this seems a pretty negligent and lazy way to handle shipping charges and if, as seems to be the case at the current round of auctions, dissuades people from bidding then that's pretty unfair on the charities.

i used to ship quite a few things via ups and there were certain dimension limits that if i went over these limits i would be charged as if the package weighed a minimum weight. for instance, i'd ship say a computer and package it very well which would take a large box. sometimes the computer might weigh 20 lbs but the dimensions would add up to breach some pre-defined limit and they would classify it as an oversized box and i'd be charged as if it weighed a minimum of 45 lbs. there were several oversized classifications if i remember correctly, but honestly it never really affected the price that much.
i've never done large overseas shipments, but i find it hard to believe $855 is even remotely justifiable even for an "oversized" package. i could be wrong, but it seems very unreasonable.

These excessive shipping stories are absolutely heartbreaking! I am glad that money was raised for a good cause, but still, you'd think they'd be able to work out a reasonable shipping cost. UPS is rather expensive, especially when it comes to all the surcharges, they're probably adding more for packaging materials, peanuts, foam, a surcharge for putting it in the box, tape etc.

I was able to ship 5 pieces with insurance for about $650. Evan Pricco, Managing Editor at Juxtapoz, was very accomodating. The 48" x 48" Morning Breath piece wouldn't fit in my car so the good folks at Juxtapoz helped me out with the company van.
