While you won't hear me arguing against a 250 price being extremely high, I think depending on the quality if will be worth it. I mean, I wouldn't hesitate to spend that amount on a single print of his work and in this case i'm getting 4 shows worth of images. Not sure if that justifies the price, but since he doesn't seem to be eager to release prints, I can't afford his originals, and I pretty much adore every piece he's done in the last few shows it's a must purchase for me. I don't doubt that the book will be nice. Honestly, I think it would be expensive at 100 euros. 250 euros is just taking the piss, imvho. my other pet peeve is the "limited edition" aspect. anything that is produced in a run of 800 isnt terribly "limited".

my other pet peeve is the "limited edition" aspect. anything that is produced in a run of 800 isnt terribly "limited". I guess that depends on demand. If tyler stout made a LOTR print 800 copies would seem pretty limited. But since I believe Berens last book was 1,000 copies, much cheaper, and still not sold out, I agree that it being "limited" shouldn't really factor in to the price.

agreed on that alex. 800 is'nt terribly limited at all.
one could argue that any book is a 'limited' edition regardless of run size. first edition, second edition etc. i presume that this won't be reprinted as a second edition?
250 euros / 220 pounds / 360 dollars is way overpriced for a book in an edition of 800 whichever way you paint it.

I am probably not as shocked as anyone else as I am used to Mark Ryden's prices but his books are usually not only limited but also clothbound, numbered and signed and come with a limited print or other nice stuff. For "only" a book, even limited, 250 € still seem a bit much to me. For comparison, the limited edition of Ryden's upcoming monograph from Taschen will start at €750. Do you have any more info on that, Amanda? I could not find any at all. Here you go, from the Taschen Fall 2011 catalog... a limited collector's edition of 1,000 copies, signed and numbered in a clamshell box. $1000. There is also an Art Edition of 50 copies that comes with an artwork... Heaven only knows what that one will go for! I understand it's being released at Miami Art Basel.

Thanks Amanda. Wish I'd poop money.
Doesn't Taschen publish these XL formats a few years later in regular but still a bit oversized editions? At least they did with the Walton Ford and Newton books, so I hope demand is so high they publish the Ryden too.
My apologies for hijacking the thread.

The regular trade edition will be released at some later date, Mark is not sure when.

The image shows the cover of the book and is a part of a mixed media on panel, sized 210 x 210 centimeters, titled 'Mapping Infinity' as well. This huge work (price on request) will also be exhibited.
I can not wait to see this 210 x 210 beast in person...

went by the gallery earlier today, and was privileged to have a look at the book, which really looks fantastic!.. the quality looks superb, and I was told everything was put together in Amsterdam, hence the higher price tag... and most important, the artwork featured is a huge step forward from the one featured in his older books.. by far my personal favorite body of his work! the highlight of the visit was, of course, seeing "Mapping Infinity" in person.. the worn out term "pictures dont do justice" could never be put to a better use than for this piece.. Im seriously planning of getting popcorns and going back to the gallery next week, and watch this beauty for some 90mins or so: hi res image here >now, I did get some extra show cards, so I'll be happy to mail them to the first 3 people that reply to this thread...

Well I've been back to this page several times now, just fascinated by those pics. The sheer volume of detail in every little section, really hard to comprehend having the mind and talent to create something like this.

As tempted as I am to get a book, it's about £200. The most I have ever spent on a book is 100 on an out of print Ashley Wood collection.
For that money I am always going to get a print (by someone else) that can at least go on the wall.
The work does look *amazing* though.

was at the gallery again and saw all the drawings in person.. they look lovely, and Im still struggling about whether to pull the trigger on one or not!?... basically, Im doubting between getting a limited edition book + drawing Vs getting The Kiss print.. personally, i don't think i could ever be satisfied with a berens print. i know they aren't in everyone's budget, but as a fan of his stuff and after seeing the products in person....i don't see how the print could really be the same. i was also steered away from a print by someone who had seen them in person because they of course just don't have the "feel" as his originals and i think there's something really special about what he does that wouldn't come across in a reproduction. this isn't to knock prints in any way. i own and love a lot of them. i just feel like there's three dimensions to his work. the kiss is one of my favorite works of his and i considered buying the print also, but given the cost and after hearing about there's really no comparison, i decided to pass and hold out for og. i think these drawings are a cool way to get a small something from him. they are expensive yes, but i'm sure insane amounts of work went into them and he doesn't usually do anything small/affordable from what i've seen except with the books. there are a couple i'd have had my eye on if i was in a different situation... at least you have the luxury to go look them over first. that should make your decision easier. i haven't seen his prints in person but i'm sure you could see them at jaski too, if you haven't already. good luck with your decision, but i don't think you can go wrong getting something from him. are you going to the opening (or did it already happen)? he's insanely nice in person.

thanks greenhorn. i appreciate the link. honestly, these are neat but i don't think these drawings hold a candle to his finished pieces. at ~$2500 for book and drawing you could start a nice savings toward an OG. that said, the book does look very nice though. if money isnt an issue i'm sure you'll love it.
