in seeing this, i'm reminded that i really like his earlier geometric works. with their larger, simpler, more "q-bert" like patterns. this one is especially nice, with the various heads that are painted within the pattern chaos. i agree, it'll be interesting to see the result of this auction, though i'm always underwhelmed with barry's auction sale prices. especially when i think about his standing and his history of museum shows. i'm sure a good showing at cheim & read will shift that.

Fair enough. It's just hat 50 of your 63 posts in 2 years have been about Auerbach and Printed Matter. That made me nervous of your motive... heaven forbid we have a forum member that only comments on a couple of art threads. suspicion? i say we call the authorities!! prpr...you should comment in the luke chueh thread just to throw them off your scent. ps- for the record, i like the [2,3] book also. and yes, i own it. amongst other auerbach works. i'd like to thank the forum members that felt my comment (see the above), as snarky as it was, warranted 2 smites. the whole "exalt | smite" system is amazing. i guess i'm not "friendly" enough to keep myself in the positive numbers. please continue to smite me. i'm the worst. such a bad person. ______ ---> back to actual tauba info....... i went and checked out that tauba auerbach "large-scale, multi-geared, human-powered drawing machine" several years ago when it was on display at the old exploratorium location. it was fun. i took two of my "collaborative" works home, and have them rolled up somewhere. does anyone know if the tauba machine is on display at the now opened new exploratorium location? i hope it is. i should go check it out again.

i'm a fan of Tauba and Printed Matter is the clearest way i can describe my relationship with both parties. i want them both to succeed so there is a bias - but i think it is the kind of bias inherent in almost all posts. you've posted that you don't like Tauba's work so i guess that is another kind of bias (and maybe the reason my positive posts cause you to question my relationships). i've posted a few times here that [2,3] is still available because i believe it is a great work (on view at, and owned by, NYMOMA, for example) and it is still relatively accessible/affordable. i wasn't reading/posting on this board back when the fold print was first offered by printed matter for $150 but i did pepper my friends with tips on that work over the course of a year as i saw that it was still available (and i still have my fold print and [2,3] - i don't post here to promote work so that i can flip it). Fair enough. It's just hat 50 of your 63 posts in 2 years have been about Auerbach and Printed Matter. hmmm.. i think she's losing me a bit. folded paper? is that what i'm looking at here? imperfectly folded at that. i think that's what i don't like about it. maybe i'll find something else to spend my 120K on.

Concerning the price of the woven piece that sold for $53,000 at charity auction, the real cost to the buyer of that piece is probably closer to $40,000. You arrive at that amount by looking at the current tax laws. If you can show you paid in excess of the real value of a piece (auction estimate $25,000) at a charitable auction then the additional amount over the real value ($28,000) is tax deductible. If the buyer lived in CA like me and is in the highest tax brackets (federal and state) then you can take about 45% off the $28,000 and add it to the $25,000 estimated value and the real cost is $40,400. The buyer can point to an auction price of $53,000, but in actuality only had to pay $40,000. It’s good to be rich. I understand the math, I’ll leave it to the experts to argue if it is art or not. so awesome. i love nerdy things like this.

What gallery or galleries represented the artist. Solo museum shows. Biennials. Group museum shows. Museum collections (sometimes). um, correct me if i'm wrong, but tauba already has all those boxes checked. i've always been curious; when does the question of "hype" vs. "the real thing" come to an end? is there an age? is there a specific event? a dollar amount? in a way, i hope it doesn't come to soon. i do enjoy this discussion.

"at this point in her career...."
are you saying that in thinking that she's not established? i'd say she's earned her position. showing for 9 years, solo museum shows, chelsea gallery, etc. she's more than hype. on this forum, i can see that she's kinda hype. most of the talk on here is availability and price-centric. but that's excitement based. big numbers are exciting. in a way, i think that 53K is reasonable for that work. and i love that it's a printed matter benefit, as they can use the money. they're awesome. now i'm just rambling on and on. good for everyone involved with this auction, that's what i say.

it is exactly as the seller discribes it. i used to see them come up every now and then. been a while since one has been available. sold for a really good price. was thinking it would have gone for twice that amount. if you're the buyer (no need to say) then you got a really great deal, on a really good item.

...i had that same "few dollars" thought. it's currently doubling the 3.5K.
and am i the only one that doesn't really like the photo of her floor screen print edition? it just doesn't do it for me.

as far as a photographer documenting their life, their loves, their drugs, their ups, their downs, and all the shit they do.....i think she's got a good eye for it. 80% is whatever, 20% is really nice. she's got the attention of some people that could really help her. keep an eye out.

he's the sort of artist that makes art that looks easy to make (and is) and people seem to eat it up. he's been tapped on the shoulder. lord only knows why.
good for him.

why is this even a critical topic here. os g. is two guys earning a living from their talent and their art. i say good for them! this is a respectable venture. the scarves look great. it's not my taste, not my thing, and not anything that i'll ever want, but they're not aiming at me. and thank god for that. i'd rather see an artist go in with a luxury label than say, toys r' us... or nickelodeon. yuck.. __________________ on a side note; one of my favorite print adds was a LV photo of gorbachev in a car driving along the berlin wall with a LV bag next to him. it's beautiful, well lit, somber. best part....the REMIO VTS tag on the wall...... right next to his head. love it. go Remio!! get up!! www.gomoneyways.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/28_05306_001_VUITTON_Core_value_Mikha_l_Gorbatchev.jpg

i see the beauty of an idea. i love the computer simulation. and sadly, i've seen other art organizations getting behind this project. i can't blame them, or anyone. it's a great concept. and it would be amazing if it worked (or works...if they get that far) but i'm so deep into the concern for the health and well being of the plants that i can't get behind it. not in a "i love all living life forms" kinda way, as i kill more plants in one day of work than this project will ever kill. my concern is from a visual stand point. unhealthy bamboo looks like sh*t. bamboo with no leaves on it looks bad. and let's also focus on this joyful idea..."they've even talked of mining moisture from the air to water the bamboo." the air in Los Angeles....right next to a freeway. seriously? what planet are these pie in the sky optimists from?? how about they mine the water, fill their cups up, and all take a big drink.
keep in mind, bamboo is the main thing i hate about this proposal. there are other things i hate, from a gardening point of view, but the bamboo is the main thing i hate.
to end on a positive note, i do like that so many people like the idea of removing billboards and creating art. i'll give money for that.
