Hey guys,
Just a quick question. There's a painting I'm interested in at a gallery, I have no experience dealing with a gallery to purchase original art, is the price usually something that gets haggled over to some degree or is sticker price pretty much the final word? I don't want to show improper etiquette but at the same time I don't want to leave cash on the table either.
Thanks

There is almost always room for negotiation, and often for a substantial discount. I would start by letting them know that you are accustomed to receiving 25% off of ask. They will likely counter, you go a couple of rounds and settle on a number.

twitch,
it also depends on how long they've had the piece. if it's in a current show vs something they've had for a year. i've gotten some great deals on pieces from several shows prior to current that haven't sold.
you can always make an offer for a reasonable price that you're comfortable with and the worst that can happen is they turn you down. i've found most galleries that i've dealt with to be willing to negotiate on price and quite pleasant to deal with.

I've never purchased something from an auction house but am curious. Is it assumed that the work is in excellent condition unless otherwise noted? The provenance is genuine but the piece(s) is/are framed and I am wondering if there is any validity to my concerns that the piece(s) would be in archival condition? Or is it like buying from a gallery where I have no concerns and until now never have I had to worry? Thanks in advance

I think I found my estate sale find of the year today. I found a first edition "the Art of Maurice Sendek" signed by the man himself. Maurice Sendek could easily be responsible for my love of art and illustration, so I was beyond pumped!

Or is it like buying from a gallery where I have no concerns and until now never have I had to worry? Thanks in advance Any decent auction house will have a condition report for you. Meaning they will have in-staff experts go over the piece rigorously and give you a thorough report. However, with contemporary artwork a condition report may just say something like "great condition," which may sound overly simplistic but should be understood to mean there's nothing wrong with the piece. Understand that most auction houses are offering artwork from the 1700s through today, so they're used to assessing cracquelure and paint loss and other things common to centuries old paintings but not relevant to paintings made recently. Last, an auction house can and will send you additional detailed photos so you can see for yourself. Sorry for the novel, hope that helps!

Very cool, Mr. Cashman. The videos of it in action are compelling. Thought you artchivaliers would appreciate this installation - Patterned by Nature. 3,600 LCD glass tiles running animations generated by algorithmic software modeling of natural phenomena & compositing of actual footage. Whole thing runs on around 75 watts of power, which is astounding.

After living in my house for four years I just finished transforming what was once a smelly darkroom into a guest room. This means that I now have more, much needed wall space!!
