does he try to have a show every month? maybe he's trying to expose a broad range of people to his work? maybe i'm the only one... but hearing about a barry mcgee show doesn't get me excited anymore. Personally, I'd rather someone have fewer shows and go all out with something more refreshing.... or maybe i'm missing the point with his work (I haven't been to Bolinas... maybe if i do i might change my mind)

I'd sorta agree with your critique about the number of shows he's been the focus of or contributed to over the past few months. It's pretty crazy actually. I'm a huge fan of Barry's work and I fully realize some of these haven't been conventional exhibits and have slanted towards museum style affairs. But there's something to be said for quality over quality. The sheer volume here does seem to teeter on the brink of overkill, with the expectation being that there'll be nothing terribly special coming from the next one..which isn't a good thing. I still absolutely love his trademarked work and love seeing what he has up his sleeve. And to be completely honest, I also might side with the criticism from the locals about the street work he's put up in San Diego being more eye sore than art. I'm all for outdoor murals from artists I love as a means of bringing their work into the public eye. And I can appreciate some old school tagging as much as any street art lover. That's probably the problem here. In this context, where the work was consigned and organized by the currator to coincide with such a lofty museum event, I can see why some locals may have been caught off guard by this display. I think he could've put a little more thought into the audience and come up with something with a little more artistic merit. However, that might very well be the point..challenging what the average person deems as art. And his cluster-based gallery works don't really make the leap the the streets well, so why not bomb the shit out of the space they provided him I guess. The Miami piece was more representative of the geometric elements of his gallery pieces.

Rhino: I know what you mean although it's not the same feeling as hearing Lister will be having another one of what seem to be one of his monthly shows or something. I guess with Barry, you don't really worry about it affecting his sales because that's not what it's all about. Anything unsold can be reassembled for the next show or installation. I guess if museums keep commissioning him then he's alright.
Lowpro: I wonder if that piece that was done with his crew the only thing that was done? Or will there be an individual piece from Barry.

Just thought I'd post this photo from a 2005 installation at Deitch, as it seemed relevant to that amazing wall in San Diego.

I agree! But, it is a 3 color print with one original spraycan tag (different tag on all prints).
On the print above, the Amaze-tag is original!

looks like he just didn't want to do it or doing too much tagging on the streets then forgot about the installation.

I don't like it but I find it interesting that Barry's work is getting darker and darker or more and more obtuse and dominated by singular colour. He's said in interviews before that his ambition is to withdraw from society completely and just disappear. I could't help thinking that his recent work is part of that process, as the bright lights of the city fade into nothing. But this piece slightly ruins that theory as it's where I expected him to end up. I imagined that the increasing dominance of red and simplified patterns which are slowly taking over the geo patterns in his work would eventually consume it completely before fading to black. I think Barry is quite a troubled soul and some of his work is extremely aggressive and negative.
EDIT: I'm talking about the Brazil installation obviously, not the restaurant.

If anyone in the UK hasn't seen the Beautiful Losers documentary, keep your eye on the Sky Art channel. It's a great film and should be repeated in the next week or two.

Are you saying that is the completed mural? Not getting taken down or anything? If so, then it is kinda strange. Also, does anyone know what restaurant that is in NY? He's probably in town also for the huge mural he will be working on.

So, turns out the mural was all tags like the one he did in San Diego.

so... how are we supposed to interpret it? is it supposed to have some sort of significance and be appreciated ? or is he just being grumpy and rebellious?

I like these walls of handstyles a lot — enough that I wrote a little essay about the San Diego one last month. I think if you put some thought into it, you could come up with motivations for what he's doing.

I like the fact that even though the one down in SD was criticized by some of the general public, he still went to a bigger stage (NY) and did the same thing. Kinda like a F U to those critics.
