what a great looking show. he's really on fire at the moment. great set of pics gabe - hope you're enjoying your trip! thanks... i really enjoyed wandering in this exhibition. i think i've gone to the pyo gallery like 5 times already for the last few days! i can't help but admire what choe has done for this show... i find it really hard to believe that he produced that many pieces in just a month's time! his installation was pretty awesome and hope he'll continue to do like this in other country someday! anyway, choe said that he's not in hurry to leave china and will probably explore around after being in the nutshell for some time! i don't think i'm ready to fly back home tomorrow! i'm really having so much fun here in beijing meeting new friends!

Took some photos of his older zines that may interest ya. It's quite nice to see how much Choe's work has progressed from his young days to today... His "Tome" Prison zine is probably one of his best zines ever as he was definitely spilling his guts out of his system into his sketchbook with all materials he could find at the prison to sketch with. More photos of his zines (some pages are NSFW): www.flickr.com/photos/fresh888/sets/72157618088896349/His modern, current art pieces are pretty far different from his zines...

Not usually a big Choe fan but when he gets it right, he just nails it. The painting at Laz is a 10.

Not usually a big Choe fan but when he gets it right, he just nails it. The painting at Laz is a 10. My thoughts exactly. His work is extremely hit or miss with me, with the majority missing the mark by a great deal. But that Rathbone Grow Up piece is so good. Too bad it's 35KGBP.

Thanks. As for pricing, it varies piece to piece but I think the pieces like this generally run around $1,000 give or take a few hundred dollars. You don't see too many like this come up very often though.

Here's a picture of my newly acquired Choe "Skrunchface" drawing: Wow... so you actually have this original drawing that was made for prints way back in 2003 or so. I actually have his print of this same drawing. If I may ask, where did you acquire from?

Confirmed. Getting one for sure! ;-)
Dave actually emailed to his friends/fans about the print availability and whom to contact before posting on the blog. I guess the ones who received the email from Dave quickly contacted the person who takes care of the prints.
He used to send mass emails to everyone which is something I truly miss about him since his emails are always quite entertaining and cracks me up every time I read them. Here's one of his old emails that I've dug up... but I gotta warn you that it's a LOOONNGG email.. so just skip if you don't have time for it! ;-)
--------------------------------------------
HEY kids if your in L.A. this week I got a treat for you, and if your in the bay I got something for you too, but first
The ying and the yang This was a great month for e-mails. I usually get some pretty good e-mails, but heres 2 from opposite ends of the love/ hate spectrum. Lets start with the hate
cho you stupid fuck. i can't wait to meet you soon so i can kick your buckethead in, you korean dog eater! look at your biter-filled webpage and it's enough to want to administer a fucken asian shit-kicking like no other. the amount of shit you copy and put out as your own is fucking hilarious. you are nothing but another useless fucking Korean kimchee dog eater biting other artists non stop. you're a bullshit fuckhead who will get a serious beat-down soon. watch yourslef you fuckeing chinky jap fighter. koreans are the most useless race. go get your eyelids fixed fuckface. ching chong bo guk kee m*th*rf**k*r.
Dear David, I just wanted to let you know that you are pretty much the first Asian man I have developed a crush on. As you may know, Asian girls seldom like Asian boys cuz it is kinda like dating yourself. Maybe it is unprofessional of me to say stuff like this... Anyway, I came across your Tokyo Prison art and that sealed it for me.. I am officially wowed by you. Are you planning to be in the ******* any time soon? Let me know if you have any travel plans anytime soon. By the way - my name is actually ****** but that is top secret. "****" is just my name for work. rock on,
From barely being allowed to hang my shits up in hair salons and Ice cream shops I know Im not even 30 yet and people are gonna talk shit, but I got my show at the MOCA (ok moca santa rosa, but fuck it, thats still something) this month and later next year at the PASADENA MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART. It is pretty exciting, Its definitely cool , all these museums, galleries, world tours, and college lectures, but all I ever wanted to do my whole life was draw comics, I never gave a fuck about museums (who even goes to museums), so I was pretty excited when DC comics first asked me to write stuff for them about 5 years ago now. But it was only to write , not draw, so it was cool , but not the coolest ever. Anyways that fell through because my editor left to marvel, and Im banned from marvel comics, but DC has had its hand out to me from the beginning, and when it gets right down to it, although I could fucking kill it if I ever got a crack at spiderman, hulk, or the x-men, Id rather be at batmans house. I say this every year but this might be the year that I return to comics. Stay tuned. (I have a six page comic I did for SCION magazine out at the end of this month, hey 6 pages is a start) I also get emails every week from students, and struggling artists, asking how I got so successful so fast. First off , make no mistake, a decade of busting my ass, eating and breathing art everyday for my whole life is not fast. And the answers pretty simple. Bust your ass, follow your heros, and DO IT YOURSELF.
Bust your Ass.- I saw this awesome movie this week called HUSTLE and FLOW. Go see it(preferably in a black neighborhood, I saw it in a white neighborhood and I was the only one dancing in my chair) anyways the movies about a pimp trying to squeeze a dollar out of a dime and in the meantime he doesnt have two pennies to rub together. He s trying to raise himself out of his current situation and become a rapper. This Character is not me, Also in the movie there is a skinny white trash sleeper that sucks and fucks everything to make it out. This Character IS me. And thats it. how bad do you want it? ok I never sucked anyone off ,but in life , in any field ,the people that are doing something and tremendous and worthwhile all have the same things in common. They have no boyfriends and girlfriends , and if they do , theyre totally dysfunctional relationships, they're pale , because they're always inside working, you never see them, they hardly go out, they have no social life , because theyre ALWAYS working, they dont punch a clock , they live and breath their job. Im 29 and I see these young fresh faced kids coming out of art school, and I think should I be scared of shorty? All trying to get up in the gallery and shit? Why? A lot of their hearts and minds are in the wrong place . hey princess , force your self even if you dont FEEL like it. While you sleep, while you drink and party, Im a machine I never stop. Fair weather painters, Sunday painters. Scenster painters need not apply.
Follow your heroes. AND I dont mean, copy them and bite their style. Maybe a little at first but then get over it. but I mean if your favorite artist illustrates for this magazine, or shows at this gallery , or won this award , go for the same goals. When I was 22 and had just dropped out of artschool, I went to san diego comic con for the first time and was blown away. There I saw one of my favorite comic book artists Kent Williams, he did this book called HAVOK and WOLVERINE with Jon J Muth that brought comics to a whole new level for me, I saw all the originals and kent signing books and shit and thought that was pretty cool. 2 days later back in L.A. I see him again ,in a totally different setting at the Merry Karnowsky gallery showing all his fine art oil paintings which were unbelievable. and up to this point Id been a little hazy about how to go about making a living as an artist, but after seeing Kents world, thats what I wanted for myself. (cut to 9 years later , Im banned from marvel comics, so i won't be drawing wolverine, and Merrys a cool lady, but Im sort of banned from her gallery too, its ok though I do alright). Also Barry Mcgee one of my favorites has taken it to another level, in terms of graffiti, so I wanted to know how he does it. So I applied for every grant and fellowship that Barry had gotten. In the end I got rejected for all of them, but I did get the XERIC grant . which jump started my career, when i was 22 its a grant started by one half of the creative force of teenage mutant ninja turtles. (xericfoundation.com) check it out, if you draw comics give it shot, if it all goes to shit, get a job, or hustle and flow. WHOOP THAT BITCH!
Do it yourself. D.I.Y.And especially now. With whats out there. I cant believe there was a time when Id have my black book, and Id go through all my art , and have to pick which ones to make color copies of, and then pick which magazine or editor to send it to, so every promo pack costed 5 to ten dollars. But these days the struggle has been eased, put your shit online and thousands can view it . no prob. With art, music, movies, all this shit is so cheap and accessible , theres really no excuse anymore. If all you get is rejection letters and doors slammed in your face. Fuck them. Fuck the whole world. Do it yourself. Start your own comic, your own magazine, your own gallery. But put your heart into it and make sure its good. Just because you CAN do something , doesnt mean you should, there are mountains and himilayas of rotting festering donkey shit out there in every medium. Dont add to it. only do good. and if you hate computers and technology fuck all that and grab 2 cans of krylon ultra flat black go outside and put your art up on the walls. until you do that, you will never, get it.
The drummer for U.S. bombs told me this (and I think the drummer from rolling stones told him) and it might not apply to artists since a lot of artists blossom after their 30s . but he said,if you dont make it , by the time your 30, just treat it like a hobby and get a real job.

In fact, much of his current work reflects time spent in jail during his last trip to Japan. At his upcoming show at GR2, the San Jose-based artist will be sharing his latest experiments with sculpture in addition to his paintings.
A reception for the artist will be held from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday evening, August 20

THE BIG BREAK!!! You been barely scraping by for years, and then one day you get your big break. And by big break in the art world ,I mean anywhere from 5 to 20,000 dollars. When that day comes Ill tell you how I spent my money. Because sometimes you get a big break, and then you never get another one again, or Not for along time. First off celebrate take your parents who supported your ass, or your significant other that stood by through all your artsy bullshit, and get em a nice Surf and turf dinner, especially if theyre vegetarian. If you dont have anyone special , shave that thing off your fucking face and go get a real haircut at the barber shop , not from your roommate or sister, feel and look like a real human again. Do not get a tattoo. Do not , do not , do not spend it all on a nice pimp my ride car or even a crappy old American car Spend 10- 20% on a cheap used Toyota with good gas efficiency(mini vans are the greatest cars ever, don't spend more than 2 g's) Or if you already have a car. Leave. Go someplace take a vacation somewhere longer then two weeks, just go Get out of my face.(and when you get to wherever it is your going, dont watch t.v. in your hotel room, go outside) I gave 10 % to GOD ( fuck you , I know what your thinking I used to think the same thing, it all comes back ten fold) Another 10- 20% set aside for rent and living for the next three months( two if you want to live dangerously) The bulk of it 50- 70% should not be spent on toys you want. If your in debt or have a loan out, pay it off. If your all good with the sharks then Put all this money into funding your own self published book, T-shirt company Or movie, or whatever. So you have something that you can sell and have money whenever you check you po box. I have two sold out self- puplished Books , and have been living off sales my last book for the last three years. At this point you should have nothing left to play with , but if you were able to stretch your dollars out. Its all coke sleepers , the horse track and gravy from here or whatever your into. I got a rolan-v drum kit. Nothing gets me going like 808 . I go crazy when I hear a cymbal .
I know my website says Im updated but its been almost a year. Ill do something about soon.. Also on the same night Im having my show One of the best painters alive is having his show ten minutes down the street in culver city AARON HORKEY sat . august 20th 7 to 11 pm At BLK/MRKT 6009 washington blvd. Culver city ca blkmrktgallery.com if you havent seen his work , and you re in l.a. you have to go see it.

For some reason, I can't seem to find his older emails from 2003/2004. I guess I had deleted them by accident :-( But nevertheless here's another one... Taking hot baths kills sperm inside a man’s scrotum is what miss bingley my science teacher told us in fifth grade, so I haven’t bathed much since then. I couldn’t even if I wanted to seeing as I don’t have a bathroom in my home, I resort to showering at 24 hour fitness and strange hotels. That is where I’m at now, a strange hotel not more than 5 minutes ago is too much to contain in ROME ITALY , and the discovery I have just made so I must share it with you here and now. Now I haven’t bathed in years, I shower somewhat but I can’t remember the last time I drew a bath. But being on tour gets you especially dirty and I wanted to keep reading my magazine so I decided to take a bath. I was in there for what must’ve been over an hour way paste pruney, but the article was so in depth I forgot, only when it looked like my fingers and toes had aged a century and the skin looked like it was gonna slide off the bone did I decide to drain the water. But I didn’t get out, I finished the last two sentences of the article threw it out and then I watched and observed, slowly the water level dropped, my knees, appeared than my chest then my gut, then my ding dong, I was lying naked in the tub listing to the last of the water spin out. Now I haven’t been a starving artist for quite a bit and I put on 40 pounds after I got out of jail, so you could say I’m fat so I don’t know if this will make any sense to skinny people. But what happened next brought such joy and tremendous glee to my face. I was lying wet and naked in the tub and as I finally decided to get up my lower back had suctioned to the tub floor and when I lifted my back the most inhuman tremendous flatulent sound came out of my lower back. I was shocked and amazed, was it a fluke? I tried it again even better. MyLan came in to see what the heel I was doing, my farts were no surprise to her. I couldn’t believe it I felt as if I just invented dipping dots or stepped onto Jupiter. Did everyone know about this? And I was the last one. I stayed till the end of the movie and I got my surprise, yes!!!! I stayed and made fart noises come out of my back until the people below called hotel security and my back was purple. The reason why I’m telling you this retarded story about my glorious discovery, is because this is the closest example I can think of, of the feelings that ran through me the first time I discovered the art of the men below. I was astounded and I wanted more. I felt as if I was seeing the best art ever. And I might abuse that phrase several times in my descriptions, but it’s only because you know it’s true and also my limited vocabulary. I know all these fine gentlemen they are a meeting of some of the greatest living painters today possibly ever. some of them get the respect they deserve but most of them don’t, there’s a huge influx of art that is NIEVE, badly drawn or just plain crappy. I like some of it but most of it sucks . this is a celebration of draftsmanship and illustrating expressions of the heart mind and soul. Renderings and pushing pigments with the best of them. These are my soothsayers. The truth is in and between the lines. There is soul in these brush strokes and the strokes don’t lie. Another dose of DC... And is crazy… I will be departing to central Africa. The congo . the heart of darkness, in about three weeks , I was there about 10 years ago , and I will return with a camera man(harry kim), a body guard, and the only missing equation, is a very suave speaking French man. Everyone there speaks french,No one speaks a word of English there (side note to all third world countries: if you don’t like being a third world country start teaching English , not French),so your level of communication has to be able to deal with this type of worst case scenario(also If you can use a camera, speak Bantu, or afrikans and have any martial arts or weapons training background, those would be helpful) worst case scenario #36 Bandit holding machine gun: give me your fucking camera(in French) Translator: ok I will give you my camera(in French)but before you take it. would you rather we film you, and you can tell us your story and show us your life and millions of people all over the world would see it, which would mean you have to let us have the camera back and also let us return home safely or would you rather keep the camera which the battery is going to die soon, and there's no adapters in your country to power it? This country is poor , desperate, and corrupt, but it is not without it’s warmth and goodness. With that being said, the danger level is high, it’s more dangerous than going to Somalia or bagdad, civil war has been raging in the congo for decades, there’ are diseases and killer insects and snakes, there are bandits and hijackers everywhere, so there is a chance you will never come home, but if you can speak French and are crazy enough please e-mail me, if you are a woman I would highly highly recommend not applying unless the possibility of being raped by african men interests you.i need someone immediately or else the trip will be postponed. The trip is sponsored by vice magazine, tickets and expenses will be covered, and you will get a little money, I don’t know how much. The last time I went it was 1995 and I was 19 years old, and nobody knew that I went , or where I was, this time if you don’t hear from me for awhile you’ll kind of know what happened.if you want to know why we're going go to google.com type in "congo" and "dinosaur" and see what happens Meanwhile in san jose...... I have had 10 year long history of paintings being stolen from my shows, I’ve had shows all over the place so I don’t think it’s one person. I want to stress once again, in this life if there’s something you really really want , like a painting, talk to me lets work something out, we can always work it out. Life isn’t just about money. Trade can work also. So I had a good year... year and a half where i had plenty of shows and everyone behave and no one stole, but my last two shows in San Francisco I’ve had paintings stolen. If you know who it is please have the painting mysteriously make it’s way back to me or the gallery, no questions asked, if the culprit is ever found out or you get caught, the consequences will be nah joo ga ee geh sek kee… pleae Believe that. Most of the work sold in this last show, (thanks mysterious big spender who ever bought all the big ones),and I think this website might not be updated, but the show comes down tomorrow, so if you want anything last minute , check it. ssl36.pair.com/attack1/stores/upperplayground/category/FIFTY24SF+Artwork+for+Sale/or fifty24sf.com before I go to africa..... I guess congress just passed something that says January 13th or is it the 14th? Is officially Korean American day. So I guess all you Koreans out there can skip school and eat galbee that day.(side note: to everyone who thought it was unfair that all the art in my last show was 10% off to all Koreans, don’t worry even a little bit. Korean’s don’t buy art.and they didn't) I will be working on this day in los angeles, Q and A , it’s all about Q and A , just don’t ask stupid questions.here’s where I’ll be.. 680 Wilshire Place, LA, CA 90005 and the building is the Korean American Education Center. And the date is Sat, Jan 14. i'll be there from 1 to 3:30 bullshitting and answering your thoughtful questions See you there, anyone can come. Later that evening…. I totally forgot about this. The black market one year anniversary show is going down in culver city. This is one of the first galleries that showed my work in los angeles, and I’m always down to support them. Come check out some of my new work as well as some of my favorites. Saturday January 14th 6 to 11 pm 6009 washington blvd. Culver city blkmrktgallery.com doze, evan hecox, jeff soto, dave Kinsey, jose parla, dave choe, etc…. go check the website, I can’t type everyone, I’m too tired. blkmrktgallery.com and even later on, directly from los angeles I will be leaving to spain for BREAD & BUTTER EUROVISION - BARCELONA. 2nd edition 18 – 20 January 2006 autumn/winter, 2006/2007 Exhibition Site: Fira Barcelona www.breadandbutter.comI will be painting with rich Jacobs, matt Gordon, george Thompson, neck face, I think mickey Avalon will ride with us who knows rvca is sponsoring us. . see all you euro kids out there. Directly from spain me and harry will be leaving to the congo if we find the translator. c’mon, cheer up kids 2006 is here, and it’s your year, your shits gonna blow up this year. And everyone in a dead end fuuuuuucked up relationship for more than half a decade drop that shit tonight, it ain’t working he/she still might love you, but they really don’t. you know they don;t or else they would've ,could've should've. drop that shit and move on. Fresh start. People that keep asking me to be their friendster, or join livejournal, or myspace, or thefacebook, or whatever.even though i appreciate the invite, I get hundreds of e-mails a day , to my regular email account, 70% from nut jobs, do you think I want to add more bullshit to the chaos? Fuck I think I need a manger or an assistant again. i have plenty of unhealthy habits and hobbies i don't need any new ones. Here are some extremely helpful links about Chuck Norris (I think there over thousands of chuck stuff but this is the main 30 I keep finding)I’m proud to say I once met mr. Norris when I was 7 living in orange county, at the local chuck e. cheese. rmfo-blogs.com/chrissy/archives/2005/11/21/this-post-needs-no-title/Vincent gallo www.vgmerchandise.com/misc.html(read the last item that he has for sale for 1 million dollars in his misc. items for sale section) biggie smalls www.slurb.com/rfrancis/ebonics.htmland dave chappelle(this will take some time to read) www.chappelletheory.com/That really gave me insight into them and made/wasted my day.
