to be honest I'm not really a fan of this one and at $6k Not crazy about it either. Not to mention its price.

the uber large forhead and flat hair throws it off completely for me as far as the image the word means silence btw, and I don't really get how it ties in.

Ryden's upcoming show is in Japan in Feb. 2009. I wonder if this is the direction it's going towards. Judging by the title of the show, probably not, but, this has a strong eastern feel to it.

i believe i've seen a few similiar works by mark in the past (possibly as prints) and i've never understood the appeal (nor the price point) when compared alongside his typical body of work and other editions.
this piece is just unpleasant to look at.

Here's the info from Sour Harvest i think?
MOCA Projects Council recently released a limited-edition silkscreen print entitled "Silence" from Mark Ryden.
Produced especially for MOCA, this wonderful artwork is a near perfect reproduction of an original Ryden painting. Meticulously crafted, printed on finely handmade paper from Bhutan, and carefully dyed and aged, the work is completed by two embossings created in the final process—a beautifully hand-sculpted bee and the printer’s chops into the corners.
"Silence" (2008) measures 28 x 22 inches and has been framed to the artist’s specifications. A signed and numbered edition of 50 with 10 Artist proofs. MOCA is down to the last twenty of these and they are priced at $6,000 (not including sales tax or out-of-state shipping). All proceeds benefit MOCA. If interested, drop 'em a call at 213-633-5318.

I actually like the image & appreciate that it looks different from most of his work. Also cool that it's not your typical Ryden giclee or litho. However the price seems to be for those patrons of the arts types that can drop 6K without blinking an eye. I can't afford it, so the price is irrelevant as to whether I like it or not.

is there a specific time period of his body of work that this image represents or does he sometimes deviate with pieces like this?

I'm going to guess it's from his upcoming show in February.

while the colors throw me off, i think its really amazing that ryden continues to be so generous in supporting various charities and organizations.

It does look a little different than his usual stuff. Is it because it's a silkscreen?
It's probably expensive cuz it's a benefit for the museum. I mean these people probably would have donated 6K for nothing, instead they get a print.

did anyone see that Exotica print go for $500 on eBay? Amazing... Ha. Well, that is easily some of his worst works to date..imo, of course. I think Lincoln Hands, which I denigrated before, is more Ryden-esque than Exotica. I mean, I'd never consider buying one in a million years and always chuckle/cringe when I see one listed on eBay when I do my rounds. But true, it is still amazing if it was mint and everything. I didn't see it. The Ryden market certainly hasn't been invincible in this mess. Shit, I almost got my hands on my Holy Grail (a canvas Sputnik) for a price I never thought I'd ever come close to seeing it at again just last month.

did anyone see that Exotica print go for $500 on eBay? Amazing... No cert, framed without a matt (gleened from just looking at the ad), so god knows what else lurks behind that frame job! Hence -a $500 big time gamble on someones part... I agree with Walt - that piece (and Pele) has always appealed to general Tiki, kitsch type collectors - the purist art/Ryden collectors that I know have never gravitated to those. Although I'm sure there are Ryden completeists out there that have to have every piece ... Happy Thanksgiving everyone! jIm
