You know, I wonder if the painting would've been even better if that car wasn't there. The image would've been simpler, and probably more powerful (and a tad more subtle?)... I still really enjoy this piece. yes i kinda know what you are saying. that car is ultra realistic and for some reason, i'm not sure i would buy this one althought i don't know how i would feel without it there either.

I still really enjoy this piece. yes i kinda know what you are saying. that car is ultra realistic and for some reason, i'm not sure i would buy this one althought i don't know how i would feel without it there either. Yeah, I tend to agree on the overbearing complexity of this piece. Sure there is a lot of space to fill in a 30x40, but a more subdued complexity, akin to Rise Above, can go a long way. This thing is just a bit too in your face...and not necessarily in a good way, at least for me. From the jump, I had serious mixed reactions when I first saw the piece. Everyone seemed to be so in love with it, while I really struggled with it. I still like it just fine. I think this might be the lone recent work that I might actually not purchase...but if given the opportunity, I doubt I'd pass. Conceptually, like essentially all of Josh's work, I'm a fan. I like the bold symbolism of nature fighting back. Like others, though, I'm having trouble with the piece due to that big flaming car in the background, despite realizing it's the main focal point of the piece. In a general sense, I think Josh's rendering of fire is grade school at best. And this, more than Scorch I or Frenzy, seems even more poorly painted for some reason to me. I understand he's attempting to produce the look of a raging inferno. But it just looks bad to me, and is a bit too busy in all. Personally, I hope this is the extent of his fire-centric pieces. He's turned into a little pyro.

I think I'd prefer this one without the car as well. Mainly because the perspective on the hood is off and thats what my eye jumps to every time I look at it now. Those deer would look plenty menacing on their own.
His stuff has grown on me since I first saw it. I definitely prefer the pieces without water though.

if you guys like this stuff....check out Brian Donnelly at show and tell gallery. That guy can paint with the best of them and it is a little more challenging than Josh's work imo.

Is that a clump of grass bursting through the pavement. Kinda like it but maybe could have done something different with his first big piece. Hopefully he'll do more of this size in the future.

I believe it's Nature bursting through the pavement. Taking over after we're gone, perhaps.

don't know if this was on here yet but David from David B Smith Gallery and Josh are looking for help from Collectors or owners of his originals: here's the message. it was posted on the josh keyes forum
Hello everyone,
We would like to put out a post regarding an upcoming exhibition at Missouri State University. Here is the overview, directly from their Exhibit Curator:
"There is an exhibition being organized around the theme of "sustainability", to coincide with Missouri State University's Public Affairs Conference in April, 2009, of similar theme. The exhibit is entitled "Troubles in Paradise", and it will run April 3-25 in the Missouri State University Art&Design Gallery. The work will need to arrive by March 24, and it will need to broadly fit the environmental sustainability theme of the exhibit.
The university is the Missouri institution of higher education having as its statewide mission the theme of Public Affairs. The conference on public affairs began five years ago at the time of Missouri State's centennial celebrations, and each year the conference has grown in both size and excellence, with participants from many countries and disciplines, coming from business and government sectors as well as academic. Missouri State University enrolls over 21,000 students in graduate and undergraduate programs, and the Springfield metropolitan community has a population of 300,000+.
We believe that it is important to let our community know that many artists are engaged and concerned with issues pertaining to the health of our planet and the quality of life on earth for all beings, and those artists are offering insights and solutions, addressing sustainability challenges from the local, national and international levels."
If any of you have original work by Josh Keyes, and you might be interested in exhibiting it in this, please contact me at 'info @ davidbsmithgallery.com'. If your work is selected and exhibited to represent Josh Keyes, we will send you a Printer's Proof of "The Call I" to fill your wall for the 4-6 weeks that it is out of your hands. We can also discuss all of the details in regards to shipping, insurance etc.
Thank you for the interest and consideration! We're excited to see what options might be out there.
Best, Dave (& Josh)

The Black Eyes Peas video was shot by Ben Mor who owns Josh's shark installation "1000 Points of Light" which was exhibited at our gallery last year. Here is a picture Ben sent the gallery from the video shoot.
