So Mugrabi the buyer and $290 the price , sounds just about right to me !! Is this legit , who knows imo very very doubtful but I really didnt expect anything different from the first Fold to market and actually thought it could of gone for potentially more. Yesterdays 2 pieces in the Christies day sale failed to sell though !!

'Jose Mugrabi, the New York dealer, took home Ms. Auerbach’s 2010 painting “Untitled (Fold),” described in the catalog as an “optical puzzle” of folding and unfolding spray-painted creases. Estimated at $200,000 to $300,000, Mr. Mugrabi bought it for $240,000, or $290,500 with fees. Another record price for an artist at auction was set for Dan Colen. “S&M,” one of the artist’s abstract canvases created only of chewing gum that was expected to bring $200,000 to $300,000, was bought by Wendy Cromwell, an art adviser, for $480,000, or $578,500 with fees.'

Maybe I'm being simplistic, but given his standing as a collector couldn't Mugrabi just have walked in to Paula Cooper and bought a 10x bigger canvas for a 10th of the price? It just makes no sense to me why such an important collector would need to pay so much for such a small and recent work, unless it was to make a very public statement. The only rational explanation is a crude attempt at market manipulation.

After hearing that name, I would think the family has like 20 of these paintings in their warehouse and now he will just upbid any other piece that comes up for auction.

In other words, it is a crude attempt at market manipulation. As afroken stated.
If you have a fold canvas you now have a Mugrabi backed floor on the value.

the naive and altruistic part of me wants to believe Paula Cooper is above slangin to the Mugrabis. whatever.

It makes me a bit sad when I see art that was produced a year ago going to auction. There was a lot of people that missed out of the cheaper price tier and I dont think this helps the artist in the long run. Ho hum....still I will be watching to see what price it goes for. Im just concerned it will be "talked up" too much.

rest easy, Tauba has been elevated to a tier where works like this are insignificant to the trajectory of her career.

the congratulation buttons/ribbons are really nice in person (bigger button than i imagined, some magic in the overall look&feel of it). they remind me somewhat of the Paulson Bott fold/slice prints (e.g., www.paulsonbottpress.com/artists/auerbach_taub/foldslice1.html). the pattern movement (from button to ribbons) also feels like a frozen moment in a digital animation (the ribbon pattern jumped forward, or back, one step from the button pattern) - which i think is part of the magic for me. last of them still available at wearewillbrown for $150 each.
