I was wondering who forked over the crazy exorbitant price hike for It Escapes Me. Def a pretty nice piece, but couldn't personally justify paying $500 more than another 11x14 piece in that show, where they were already $500 more than an exhibit less than 3 months earlier. Not relevant here, I know, but I love Greg's work and I think that third consecutive price bump in less than a years time at UP to a level incapable of luring in new collectors might end up spelling a mini, pseudo collapse for him....and his collectors (many of which have reached their carrying capacity for his work and will no longer be pursuing in work).
Nevertheless, good stuff. That KMNDZ looks massive.

Low Pro honestly that is the most plain out aggressive/ back-handed compliment post of the week you beat *********( I have self censored myself) by a mile. Artist do not need to price by size but by image, time, and quality especially those who have had an amazing year pretty much selling out three show in the span of a few months. That piece is so amazingly detailed and tells an amazing story in my book well worth the bump in the price, I personal feel it was a steal. The second I saw that piece I kinda imagined the white knight being like mickey from the sorcerers apprentice, is escaping the tower by bringing things to life but not having the ability to control what has been animated.
Yolao great pick up for a great piece in the simkins universe. Greg mentioned that the piece is being considered to be made into a print. I think Greg and Jen know what they are doing and it is evident with their plan for this year, only one planned show with 1988 and then back to New York in 2010 in the first quarter i believe. In the meantime a few amazing surprise that I wish I could talk about but will promise not to ruin the fun. And a couple of pieces in a few group shows.
And yes a few of the collectors who have paid 20,000+ are bowing out from the simkins race rightfully so because they have a piece they feel is iconic and amazing doesn't mean the waiting list has diminished.
I think with Simkins his real measure of worth will be seen not by the price of the piece but how creative and beautiful he expands that amazing universe that he has created. His storytelling is getting better and stronger and his ability to paint light and motion is breathtaking.

hey guys! thanks for the comments, all of them !! to reply to Lowpro , about the Simkins comment , i was surprised too when i saw the price-jump on the SF exibition , and even if i had stashed enough money for the exibit had to go an extramile to buy "it escapes me".. i was in LA at the g1988 exibit and had the chance to appreciate all the pieces, and even scored one, tho "it escapes me" honestly looks like the only piece from the SF show (maybe with Damsel) that had a real jump in skill/style from LA , and im HONESTLY not saying this cos i bought it, just think that ARACHNID was 14x22 at the same price... one thing that find me totally agreeing is the fact that those constant jumps ar drawing a line (not even that thin) were it will be difficult for Greg (as for other artists) to have a new fan/collecting base, which is a pity!

If your going to base your pricing on image as opposed to size you may as well just bypass the whole primary gallery show thing and just throw the work into auction a la Mr Hirst. I dont know Greg's work all that well, but I do enjoy it and can see he is an extremely talented painter.
I dont think he was trying to be rude with his comments or taking a dig at Greg. It is something we have witnessed with many artists over the last year or two. It's good that people get vocal about stuff like this. Yea, its tough to be an artist but there is a very fine line they must walk in regards to pricing. 3 increases in one year is excessive for any artist. Also lets not kid ourselves, while he has shown at some nice galleries there hasn's been a Ryden-esque jump to top tier galleries that would warrant such increases. Maybe that's in the pipeline, I dont know.
I guess my point is lets try and be a little more objective about this and not take criticism so personally.
very nice collection btw.

Rico your post make me laugh!
art by the inch what a novel idea. Only flippers and collectors deserve to make huge profits on individual pieces, artist should be happy that galleries take 50% and put them up on their shiny walls. I support Hirst in his auction endeavors because that is the only way to know what you are worth. I don't think Low pro was being rude if he was I would have said that just felt it was aggressive.
It is hard to follow your line about being "objective about this and not take criticism so personally."
after reading many of your posts including: "Nice guy or not, and I do not doubt that he is nice, what I find douchy is his participation in anti marijuana ad. Especially one that paints its users the way his does."
sorry I will agree to disagree

HEY !! less arguing and more comment on my fakeish chesterfield sofa!!! !! actually i dont think none myself or evilchoy labeled Lowpro commet as "offensive" , sometimes is better being straighforward and speak as u feel... i know that painting costed a LOT and had a BIG jump , but i havent bought it becase it's Craola (i have already 8 from him) but because i personally loved it. art is first of all PERSONAL , there are acclaimed painters that we will tend to like cos of the hype but at the end of the day its US living in our crib with our paintings that give a real value to the piece.. i think i got a bit out of track !! ehehe anyway i missed posting for so long , so here it was my rant ! bye guys

If you are in a primary gallery, 999 out of 1000 times you are paying by the inch. That is the only fair way to do it. If a piece is so spectacular compared to other works in a show, then let the gallery choose who their most trusted collector is and place the work in the best suited collection. Lets remember this hobby/passion is more about relationships than who has the most money to spend.

HEY !! less arguing and more comment on my fakeish chesterfield sofa!!! !! Amen...on both accounts. In an attempt to bump this thread back in line, and because you mentioned Damsel, which I too felt was the strongest piece in the show aside from It Escapes Me (which really is amazing, Oli), both of which being a step in the right direction, I thought I'd throw up one of my walls right now to compliment yours. Dueling Whale action!

I'm starting to hang up a few of pieces up the wall now. The walls are feeling lonely now... So, I've just decided to hang one painting by Palladino in our living room... The only other painting hanging is the commissioned Tessar Lo's _Magical Sorrow_ in our bedroom... You can actually see James Kirkpatrick's piece on the shelf there. I'm just waiting for it to be hung with its sister piece soon. For now, I'll just stick with this photo... make sure to see Matthew Palladino show soon in Space 1026 next month if you're living in Philly... (or even if you live in NYC.. only a couple of hours drive away)

Hey the palladino looks fantastic. The White frame really makes those colours pop. I dig kirkpatricks work too after seeing some available through cerasoli gallery. Would be nice to see another pic when you get the pair together.

I don't think he gets as much props as he deserves.

Recently saw "The Pictures Generation" show at the Met. In it, are three photos by Louise Lawler from the 80s, showing masterpiece works in private residences. The images themselves are beautiful, but they also make you think about how collecting isolates great art from the public.

that is such a cool photo. You can feel the energy of that Pollock even through a photo of it through a computer screen

outerborough - your gallery is absolutely wonderful! here's the current iteration of 2 of my walls that i'm constantly tweaking ever so slightly: (a note: the curtains are only open to provide light for the photos - normally that room is a cave of blackness. just wanted to get that out there
