I find his work super interesting. Been on the fence months now. The outdoor metal sculptures are some of my favorite pieces ive seen in a while. Love the way he shows the passage of time using the elements in nature, almost making nature the artist.

I've been following Falls for a while and own a few pieces. Extremely talented, but inconsistent as of yet. What he will grow into in 10 years' time is going to be awesome.

I'd love to see what you have Mose. I just bought a couple of pieces myself. Apart from his obvious talent for exploring the conceptual boundaries of his medium, I really dig his uneasy aesthetic and colour palette. It's definitely not 'pretty' or conventionally pleasing to the eye. I think he's a really exciting artist. But you're right, not consistent yet.

Been paying attention to him for a while and simply haven't been be won over by anything yet. He's definitely all over the place with his concepts, but so are most photographers pushing the limits of the medium. He just seems even more scatterbrain. The Roll Fades are the only works that have resonated with me enough to get serious about. That quite arguably has to do with their inherent minimalism in concept and content, which runs in stark contrast to most of his other series that are way too jumbled and messy for me. The Joshua Tree series has some strong redeeming qualities too. But I'm completely lost when it comes to the tire and fruit works.

Nice mose. I do appreciate these linen and terrycloth "flags" too. Was gonna get one back in Jan from the LA Fair from that series and slept on it. Now fabric works the same size are priced at just under a 100% premium (sans discounts) from Jan prices at his new AmCon solo..which I think is way too far and too fast of a price adjustment, so I backed off again.

I hear that, I've been resisting adding one of the newer fades because the pricing just doesn't agree with me.
I do quite like the Val Verde series and almost added 2 additional. The next ones, the Los Angeles tire-based works on vinyl, were not very good to my eye. I think the Stuart, Florida pieces were good just not as iconic as the Val Verde and perhaps a little too clean. The Joshua Tree are not really doing it for me.

Like lowpro, the roll fades have been the only series that have jumped out to me and again that might just be down to there minimal aesthetic and colour palette although the production technique is very interesting in its own right. I was pretty close to buying the blue one but as it was the only piece left from the series and had the least amount of fade on the print i decided to let it pass.
I do like your flag though moses.

Well, was heading into the city for my daughter's first birthday party and the Holland Tunnel traffic was nonexistent. So, with an hour to spare I headed on over to American Contemporary to see the Sam Falls shows(plus introduce myself to dealer Matthew Dipple, who is very nice to deal with. He is patient, provides great information, and is very responsive. Basically, everything you could want, IMO.) The show is everything several of us have said. It clearly shows Falls is a serious talent. A very serious talent. It also shows he has so much energy that he is, at times, all over the place and not everything turns out well. The Joshua Tree pieces are so very much better than they appear online. I mean, they really improve. This piece: Is just fantastic and is easily tops of the show(for me). Really, really great. I'd say it is my favorite Falls piece I've seen in person, better than my own. The Topanga series, as seen below is better in pictures and from a distance. Up close, it reminded me of everything I don't like about Anna Betbeze's work. I mean, you take a wall back, about 10 feet, and they look great again. But, that just doesn't cut it for me. The Headstones sculpture worked for me as well. If I had the outdoor space to properly show it, I would probably have purchased it already: I hope to be able to see images of it in the future once the outdoor conditions have aged it as Falls intends. All-in-all, Falls = talent. Madly inconsistent, energetic, youthful talent. I can't wait to see how he grows and develops. It's going to be a bumpy but thrilling ride.

Thanks for the write-up Mose. I have to admit that I hadn't given the fabric pieces much credit, which is more to do with them not being possible to judge through Jpegs, but you've definitely whet my appetite. I ended up buying the magenta roll fade above and a particularly strong piece from the fruit series (again a lot of them are hit or miss for me) as I find the painted photographs really fascinating in terms of the process he goes through and personally I really feel their exuberance and energy, which Lowpro described as jumbled and messy.
I have to agree with you on AC's roster of artists. I saw Mariah Robertson's work at the big photography show that's currently on at Saatchi Gallery and it really blew me away. Another artist I'll be keeping a close eye on.

i agree with you mose, interested in seeing what happens... if it can be cleaned up i think it could be a very strong body of work. I've been following Falls for a while and own a few pieces. Extremely talented, but inconsistent as of yet. What he will grow into in 10 years' time is going to be awesome.

Thanks much for the link.
I think of it as a good thing. People are recognizing that Falls is very talented, which he is. I don't think that's the important question. I think the important question is can he maintain both the high energy of his artistic explorations of time, nature, etc. + establish consistency with regard to quality of work he makes public.

I bought a work .. last month...(so far it's made my year).

...well - you know me - I rarely if ever post what I purchase for fear of reprisal (I jest). On this occasion it was a work from his small showing of works in NYC ...a few weeks back. A photo may follow - as you know Sam's work is quite difficult to capture via camera. (all the more special when you see something in person).

This is the piece I had on hold. You need to see a high res image of it really but it truly is spectacular and at 64x80 inches it's a beast.

detail shot. this piece was so good as was the other big one, which I personally like more, but both were a true step forward for Sam.
