I am not a full fledged chet zar fan but I think he has amazing talent....This was his first piece that i considered adding to my menagerie. The only problem it is very similar to the ism skate board, and the rivet piece in terms of composition. I wonder if gas mask man is becoming his signature character. Not that familiar with his work does anybody know?

He has quite a few pieces, in my opinion, that look very, very similar. i think his color pallette doesn't help either - heavy blues and greens or maroons and blacks. sometimes it's very difficult to tell pieces apart without studying them tremendously closely.
This piece jumped out at me because as a whole, it seemed so tremendously different than what i normally see from him.

That new piece looks amazing.
I think one of the things to keep in mind with Chet's art as well, is that he is also a character designer. Working with sfx for movies and what not, so a good majority of his working process is creating new figures that can stir emotion. I can imagine its not easy to make a whole variety of them, without some of the coming out cliche, corny and what not.
I mean I don't want to name any artists, but when it comes to making repetitive, similar looking figures, there are other artists far more guilty of this.

This newest piece is by far my favorite by him so far. That could also have to do with my wanting to make of collar like that for such a long time now. Have you seen his videos up on Sketch Theatre? www.sketchtheatre.com/?page_id=13 I think I like his drawings even more than his paintings. I think its the colors, for me. Some of the details seem to just get lost a bit in the paintings or something.

This is a great interview. I think that having the interviews FREE for people to read is one of the great things about Dangerous Ink. I have gotten to know Tom a little over the past few months and him and his crew just really work hard to promote great art and it's not about money for them. I think it's important to support a magazine like this too so that it will be around for a long long time to come. So if you get a chance, pick an issue up, or if you are a business you should check out placing an ad in the mag or something.

Thanks, everybody. Here is the little 5x7" study I did for the piece: And regarding the gas mask thing- It is a theme I have used in quite a few paintings (about 15 or so out of the 100 or so paintings I have done since 2005). I already did a creepy clown painting in 2005 and I did not want to repeat myself, so I started experimenting with the "clown gas mask" idea and it seemed strange enough to work. Here is the old clown painting from '05 called, "Overlord". This was painted for the show I had with Lola at Thinkspace:

Glad to be on board. I am digging it!
Thanks about "Overlord"- I really thought that was one of my better pieces as well- but it holds the distinction of being one of my lowest selling print ever! Ha ha. Not sure why. Fear of clowns, maybe? I guess it is a little disturbing... but then again, I think all clowns are kind of disturbing.
I will be offering a print of "Clown Of Doom" soon. I think that one will do better!

Hi Chet,
Have you ever done prints of the 'Shamanic Tendencies' image you let us use on the cover of issue 3?
We had tons of feedback about it (all of it good btw), and it managed to send a shiver down the spine of a few cartoonists at the Bristol Comic Convention this year, Gilbert Shelton included.
Cheers!
Tom

Tom Hey Tom, Good to hear from you and thanks. Gilbert Shelton? No Way! "Shamanic Tendencies" is one of my favorite and most personal paintings and I do have it available as a print. It's an edition of 35 on Epson Velvet Fine art paper @ 13x17" for a mere $100. I still have about half of the edition left. Here is a link to it: www.chetzar.com/oil_paintings/BUY.htmland here is the piece for those who have not seen it:

I just picked up the three-disc edition of Hellboy 2 earlier today. Looking forward to the making of documentary. I'm hoping they show a bunch of the Chamberlain. It was definitely an awesome design. Looked just like one of the paintings come to life.

I was telling several people about a "Circus Freaks" show I was going to be in and they all where like" oh no , I can't have clowns in my house, they just freak me out to much" . They said this before they even know what I was going to paint. I think clowns are like a universaly feared symbol. I really love the clown that you did in 05. The dark creases in his face are awesome! I dig all your work though and maybe one day(hopefully soon) I will be able to have some hanging on my walls.
