that's a cute little painting. it's a pleasure to be able to see his handy work with a brush. was this in with the $85 postcards? not a bad little pick up for someone.

i've got the jules de balicourt inkjet on canvas, and i like the image, but yeah.....it's pretty cheap in quality. but i don't think it's due to any fault of exhibition a. they're a lower cost edition company. just keep that in mind.

i think it would be silly for her to have a retrospective show. and i seriously doubt she would want one. she's too busy looking forward. at least, i hope she's only looking forward.

i haven't seen other 3-D works from him. but knowing him, i'd guess that this piece is just him having a good time. he likes to cut loose and toss out odd works from time to time. i'm holding judgement on this new body of works until i see the solo show coming up. i bet it's going to be pretty nuts, and completely mind blowing. he likes to push himself to the limit.

do we know if this will be a retrospective show? or just a solo show? there's a pretty big difference.

thanks for working the magic to post the image. i don't know how to do that.
i imagine it was created in the last 2 months. i've heard of him creating even more elaborate works in this 3-d style. this seems to be more simplistic for what he often does.

been following paul for years, and i think this may be his best show to date. i'm really into it. for me, the big cabinet painting in this show is my favorite of that style. if i could, i'd swoop it up fast. really happy to see him getting some love.

i'm enjoying these posts. i'm a big matthew palladino fan, so it's great to see him getting so much attention here. love that 29 ghosts painting. i remember those paintings at his white walls show.
i'm also feeling the paul wackers energy. he's a slow burn, but continues to put out great works. he's got a show opening tomorrow night..(dec.16th) at morgan lehman in new york. great images online. wish i could see it in person.
1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year.
no photos from me. i didn't acquire much this year, as i'm saving all the money i can for a new truck.
one thing i did get, that i love, is a sean mcfarland "dark photo" that i've had my eye on for a while. sean is amazing. like no other photographer i know. he's also an eli ridgway artist. eli has a good stable of artists right now.
oh...also i'm loving the tauba auerback pop-up book, [2,3]. it's huge, and amazing.
2. Best experiences?
had a great time at the artpadsf art fair. great people. good vibe.
3. Biggest disappointments?
having the tauba auerbach static photo edition sell out so fast. i found out about it the day it went live, and by the time i checked the site, they were gone. dust in the wind. my heart broke. i'm still feeling the pain.
4. Who are your rising stars?
rising stars.....paul wackers, matthew palladino, sean mcfarland, and the date farmers (i wish they got more attention) and for under the radar i'll go with ted gahl, evan nesbit, and devin troy strother.
5. Best show of the year?
the one that blew me away, and filled me with awe, was the date farmers show at the ace gallery in la. i've never seen so much work in one show. i think there were 10 or 11 rooms. it was like a museum show. i was there for hours. and they were using one of the rooms as a studio to create even more work. so it was great to find them painting there. love those guys.
from photos i've seen online, tauba's show at bergen kunsthall looks beautiful. i also enjoy the photos of the barry mcgee show at stuart shave modern art in london. both shows are really clean, and packed with great work.

paulson has built a relationship with tauba that goes back to at least 2004-2005. they're doing a ton of work on these prints. it's not just tauba walking in, hitting print on a digital file, and paulson and tauba laughing all the way to the bank. keep in mind, not all of her prints have flown out the door as these ones have. the demand for her work is so strong right now that the tiered price change is happening at a lightning fast rate. other print sets sell slower, and thus the price changes are not seen on a daily, weekly, or monthly time-line. and as parklife2 said, not all editions even get to the tiered price point. this is how it's done, and how it's been done.... all over the world...... for a very long time. it has nothing to do with "exploiting" or "sassy publishers". that's just rude thing to say.

does anyone here have any information on what lucien smith has to say about the gym matt work? or maybe what the gallery says about them?

i'll help you out by offering to buy your #18 for £500. seems fair enough, right? that way you won't have to feel bad that you don't have the pair.

i'm sorry, but what?? most of SF? that's crazy. and yeah, they're having a benefit for themselves. they can do that. they're a non-profit arts organization. if anything, they're the one non-profit arts related "gallery" in the city that usually doesn't hold an art auction to raise funds. i think this is only the 3rd auction they've ever had. the last one was in 2004.
besides, they're way more than just a "gallery". they run two locations, and have an section of public street that they've converted into an urban forrest, a multi-use arts space, with murals on all the surrounding walls. i don't think i need to go into the long list of what they do aside from have art shows. in fact, having art shows is so low on their list, that it's a bit sad in my opinion. i wish they had more art shows. and who cares if they're crazy unorganized? if anyone knows anything about them, then they know how nuts they are. they are who they are. they don't hide from it, and they don't try to be anything else. yeah, it sucks, but lots of things suck in this world.
now as to your comment that the artists were asked to donate works, and that they aren't getting a cut....well, that's very common. that's how most benefit auctions are. the artist is choosing to help out the luggage store. most likely because the luggage store has been a part of their art career at some point. it's called giving back. if they're not cool with it, they don't have to be involved.
to your "$60 a pop"...there was a special early preview time, with musical performance, that was $150 a ticket. at 8pm the entry ticket price was $40. again, not unusual. this event was to raise money. there's no trickery here.
and maybe within the social group you talk with it's "a joke", but the luggage store gallery gave os gemeos their first u.s. show. showed margaret kilgallen, barry mcgee, tauba auerbach, steve powers, swoon, thomas campbell, paul wackers, neckface, date farmers, simon evans, chris johanson, matthew palladino, josh lazcano, andrew schoultz, and those are just the artist that come to my mind that are discussed on this forum. hundreds of other artists have worked with them, had shows, done public murals because of, and in many other ways benefitted from this "joke" of an organization.
disorganized, yes. joke, well, if you'd like to think so.

it was intentional, and part of the piece.
when barry got to the show, he asked if they would rehang it the way he had intended it to be hung; with the multi-head piece covering (directly on top of) the cracked side of the geometric piece, so that they were overlapping.
it didn't sell the night of the event. so it's still available should anyone want it.

i'll be interested to see what barry mcgee offers up. i think it might be something really good, as he's had a strong relationship with the luggage store since the mid-90's.
i'm also pretty impressed with the paul wackers painting.
tomorrow nights the night.

i agree that $6,000 isn't too much for a work of art. it's big, it's beautiful, and it's from an artist that is in demand. 6K is not all that much. especially if one were to have a very large bank roll to work with.

just saw the arrested motion coverage of the new faile mural on the bowery wall. gotta say, i really like it. for me, faile has had some ups and downs. but they're steadfast and completely dedicated. they keep at it, and i respect what they're doing. this mural is winning me back over. good work. arrestedmotion.com/2011/10/streets-faile-mural-on-bowery-houston-part-i/

this should be a lot of fun. i know i'll be gunning for a few of the artists on the list. it's amazing for me to think that (possibly) all of these artists have shown at the luggage store at one point or another. it's not just a list of great artists. these artists have a connection to the space, and to darryl and laurie. i'm hopeful that the artworks given reflects that. this show/auction should be pretty great. i'm excited. check out this video from the luggage store 20 year anniversary show that took place in 2008. there's some great artists and pieces that show up as the video plays. it's also interesting to hear laurie and darryl talk about it all. www.artbabble.org/video/kqed/luggage-store-january-2008
