I really hate to say it, and I rarely feel the need to express negativity about artists, but I am bored bored bored of this pair. It's just the same thing again and again and again. Anyone else agree?

I really hate to say it, and I rarely feel the need to express negativity about artists, but I am bored bored bored of this pair. It's just the same thing again and again and again. Anyone else agree? While we are all entitled to opinions, both positive and negative, I would have to completely disagree with you. Their last exhibition in LA was a total 180 from the installations they had done in the past. Their large canvases were multi-layered collaged work which was completely different from anything they had done in the past. The duo completely avoided the type of show they had been doing. Not to mention the series of sculptures which are brand new... I am totally on board that not everyone has to like every artist, but I just feel that these two in particular are always changing their mediums and looks. Sure its clearly Herakut - but its not the same thing. No disrespect intended though, as I am glad to see people expressing dissenting opinions here. The Boards will be better for open discussion than the constant flow of praise for everything. Keep dishing out opinions and criticism...its all healthy.

No disrespect taken. As you rightly say, a balanced debate is a healthy one. But I am the first one to think that unqualified criticism is too lazy and easy and I think my comment fell into that category, so let me qualify it now. I have a similar problem with Herakut that I have with Faile at present. To my mind they have hit a conceptual brick wall. They have switched their focus to exploring the execution in more varied ways but this can't hide the fact that it's conceptually bereft of new or fresh perspectives. That's not to say that I believe an artist should be constantly reinventing them self, far from it, but I do believe that often just subtle shifts in their output by exploring the minutiae of their thinking and pushing things to their limit is what it's about. To the viewer there needs to be some kind of intellectual reward, however small or subconscious, in following an artist's development, perhaps even a kind of logic that dawns on you as you experience new work. For me personally adding layered collage into the mix, or abandoning an incredibly symbolic and unique visual language in favour of pretty lesbians in nice colours (in the case of Faile) just doesn't cut it if there's no substance there to back it up.
The thing is that I am a lapsed Herakut fan. I've owned a stunning piece of there's in the past that provided me with much thoughtful enjoyment. I only sold it because the focus of my collection was shifting and, as much as I loved it, it didn't fit anymore. Their Dirty Laundry show, on the whole, was very impressive. But since then all I've seen is the same idea executed in lots of different ways and with varying secondary colour palettes. I find it boring and repetitive.

Fair enough. We will agree to disagree. I actually feel that the pair have been exploring some different themes as well...and I think they are one of the fewer artists that actually have something to say in every piece.
You should have heard Hera discussing some of her recent work...we should chat soon, I can't type that much.
Certainly agree with your sentiments about many artists lacking in development though. I would suggest that artists that are still as emerging in their careers as Herakut - even if they are still exploring the same themes (which i dont agree with you) - should be given some latitude to experiment with mediums/styles/techniques before being written off. Its not like they are simply appropriating other contemporary artists work with a 'twist' like another recent LA show...
I understand and appreciate the critique, but I certainly feel that there are dozens of artists discussed here that can be considered much guiltier of your concerns.

You are absolutely right. Without a doubt there are plenty more out there who are far far guiltier and I don't give them the time of day. I think the fact that I'm commenting at all is more a reflection on the fact that I do have a genuine interest in their work. It's engaged me since I first saw it and it continues to engage me, if not in the most positive of ways any more. Perhaps they have something waiting round the corner that will draw me right in again but for the moment I'm not feeling it. I guess my negative reaction is borne out of genuine disappointment more than anything else. Sorry for labouring the point. I'll leave it there.

Thanks for the nice pics! The duo really crushed the wall, and added a second piece inspired by Jeremy Lynch's son who had been hanging out with us all day. some more images on our blog:
