Would love to hear more about the process in these. The end result reminds me of color field painting. His work almost always seems to revisit aspects of art history in fresh new ways for me. I imagine these are pricey relatively speaking since they look pretty big in the pic above. 40x30 in. works on paper are $12k now. twoxtwo.org/portfolio/sam-falls/

I've been patient with Sam's work before forming any opinion. But I'm beginning to worry that he might be one of those artists whose best came first...an artist who made a splash before he was ready. The paper folds were stunning in their simplicity and, I had thought, promised something interesting to come. But the more of Sam's work I see in person (and it's hard to avoid given its ubiquity) the more underwhelmed I am.
The conceit is wearing thin, and there seems to be too little distance (i.e., none) between the conception and the final 'product'--a word that seems, unfortunately, more and more apt when describing Sam's work. I hope I'm wrong because I was very hopeful.

Well I don't agree. The more I see the more I love his practice. I think there is a continuity and an evolution. He's doing very well.
One question: Sam is no longer on metro picture website. Did they stop their collaboration?

i had the chance to see that show yesterday..and i must say that the works (picture on this website) in the main gallery with minimalist works is really not impressive
However the works on canvas in the other gallery look really really good.

Sold for $17,000 ($21,250 with the buyers premium). This was a large "classic" dye piece at 87x58 inches: Untitled (Building Blocks, Topanga, CA, Light Blue 1), 2012. The price with the buyer's premium seems right in line if the same piece were being sold today through Hannah Hoffman gallery.

Given that this size of fabric fade was $5k no more than a year ago I'd say that's a pretty solid result.

Discussions I've had with some people highlight what I view as a misunderstanding people have about buying art.
When you buy a piece by a young artists at gallery, there is an automatic assumption that you could, maybe, get 50% of that price back on re-sale. Realistically though, you have to understand that art is generally not liquid and the 'value' is pretty close to zero. Young artists really aren't supposed to have secondary markets yet.
Matching primary, at his very first auction, is actually quite an accomplishment for Falls, perhaps foreshadowing the days of true success - when primary dramatically trails auction.
