Thanks, guys. I've been watching Andrew Hem for a while, and think he's one of the most promising young artists out there.
I do seem to concentrate on a few artists at a time, Sven... I guess if they're that good, each new body of work seems more powerful than the one before. If they have enough vision, imagination and versatility, their work has ample variety and doesn't get repetitive. Also, it feels good to support someone you believe in, and a lot of these artists become friends of mine after a while... Then the emotional connection with their work becomes even more compelling.

Your collection sure is getting to be incredible, Amanda. That Berens piece is ridiculous....and the Hems, wow.

I am so impressed by your collection. Just so you know I bought a Chris Berens because you introduced him to me via a blog. I see you're a "go to" source for other artists because we have a similar sensibility about what we like. My collection is posted under Weezy.

That's really nice to hear, especially from someone with such a great collection himself. Berens was love at first sight for me, so it's great to know I've been able to transfer that enthusiasm to others through my writing. Since you're interested in artists doing new things with media, you should take a look at Edwin Ushiro. He has a show at Sloan Fine Art in New York in a couple weeks and another at Roq la Rue in the fall. I have this little study drawing of his and and another finished piece on the way. "Study for 'He Still Breathes Through Everything I See'"

I was right about similar sensibilities. Not sure about some of the comic book/anime figures, but not all are that way, and the luminosity is nothing short of framed sunshine. Spectacular. I'll ping Alix. One thing's for sure, this site may make me broke, but I look at so much art and to have other eyes out there with similar sensibilities to introduce me to such amazing, amazing artists... it's just great. Thanks!
I think Chris is showing at Lush Life this month and then has another solo end of year at Roq La Rue. I'm looking forward to both. Maybe I'll fly up for the EOY show.

I did buy one of Edwin's pieces at Sloan Gallery. It's so incredible! Framed, full-spectrum, luminous sunshine from a childhood memory, captured as you point out, in a media that I haven't seen before, at least as Edwin appears to be doing it. Thank you!

Hope Edwin is having fun tonight at his show in New York. I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to buy this painting of Edwin's cat Rusty, who died last year, ghosting into invisibility in the backyard sun. It really glows, even more than is evident in this picture. Edwin Ushiro – "He Still Breathes Through Everything I See"

I'm trying to figure out, by looking at it, if it's a mixed media piece or strictly paint.

I hadn't seen the cat in earlier shots of the Ushiro piece. Now I get it. I like your Tessar Lo as well.

I was taking my Andrew Hem charcoal, "The Full Moon," out of its frame to photograph it today.... ...when I discovered there was a lot more there, hidden under the mat. I like it even more with the expanded atmosphere and vague, unfinished edges. And how about that little girl hiding behind the bear, perhaps reaching out to hold its hand?

What a great surprise! Will you reframe it or keep it as your secret?

What a great surprise! Will you reframe it or keep it as your secret? After having seen the whole thing, it looks so trapped in its little mat box... so I popped it back in the frame without the mat and used the outer edge of the mat as a spacer to lift the charcoal back from the glass.

cool discovery! was the paint faded behind the matting? No, it's from the January "Cry for Help" show, so it hasn't been behind the mat for long. It does fade out around the top and bottom, but only because Andrew drew it that way.
