No, it's from the January "Cry for Help" show, so it hasn't been behind the mat for long. It does fade out around the top and bottom, but only because Andrew drew it that way. it would be interesting to find out why he covered so much of it or was that the gallery's decision. I talked with him about it yesterday, and he said that when he was done drawing it, he was blocking parts of it to see what worked best, kind of the way a film director will make a frame with his hands to see how a shot should be composed. He decided that the framing he selected worked pretty well, and cut a mat to match. But when I showed him the full drawing in the frame, he agreed that it was pretty powerful as he originally drew it, and that if I was happy with it, I should keep it that way. I think he didn't want to finish the whole background off completely – this was the same month as his solo show, so he was probably pressed for time – and felt that it would be unprofessional to turn in a drawing that was a bit unfinished. But I actually really enjoy the way it gets kind of sketchy and thoughtful on the sides. It gives more insight into the process, and there is something dynamic about the larger drawing that gets sort of hemmed in or truncated by the mat.

I couldn't resist these two little confections from Allison Sommers' show at Thinkspace. If you haven't seen it yet, check out my interview with her."Temple Monkeys" "Finders, Keepers" ...which has since been removed from its pink pedestal and installed in one of these handblown glass domes, with a tasteful scattering of bones...

I was extremely lucky to have the opportunity to acquire my favorite of this series of haunting portraits... her black eyes just stare into your soul. João Ruas – "Dawn III"

My favorite thing about this piece, aside from the wonderful palette, is the organic detail-- knots or eyes?-- in the papery hair that flows into the figure's garment.
Overall, Ruas makes some really smart choices in his work. There's an odd mix of divinity and melancholia going on in this portrait that, together with a sense of movement in the hair and in the golden waves on the shoulder, balances into a serenity that is intriguing and somehow engergized. The gold leaf could be kitsch in another work, but it's so complementary to the palette, it's just right here.
I was tempted by the Ruas pieces as well-- it was a great show. He just seems to be getting better, so I decided to stick to my collecting discipline (ha!) and prioritize others for the moment, waiting for the next show. Congratulations on this!

Thought I would share the Rob Sato piece I got from his last show at GRSF. He has a show coming up this Saturday, August 7th at Copro, and I have an in-depth interview with him posting tomorrow morning at Erratic Phenomena. "Metal After Math" (detail) (detail)

Really great piece. Great image, and then the detail is wonderfully imaginative-- imagine it really draws you in to look closely. Is it watercolor on paper?

Added this third Cambodia-themed Andrew Hem painting to the collection from the Jonathan LeVine show. I felt strongly that it belonged on the wall alongside "Best Find a Way" and "Beginning of an Era." The title comes from the Kate Bush song " This Woman's Work." Andrew Hem "This Woman's Work"

Great addition Amanda. I really enjoyed this piece in person. I would love to see a picture of it hanging with the other Hem pieces in your collection.

Picked up this little piece by Edwin Ushiro from the Mini Show charity event at Art Center last month. Ballpoint, rubbing alcohol and a smidge of Edwin's blood for color. "Nihoa Lullaby"

Thanks, guys. I just went down to Subliminal to pick up this little guy, one of Souther Salazar's balloons from the Pattern Recognition show. I bought it on impulse, the night of the show, which I rarely do. His stuff is really intoxicating in person, and I just couldn't resist. Souther Salazar "Late Shift"

I hung it in my office at work, as I had a nice chunk of unused wall space right in my line of sight. I'll try to snap a pic of it during the week sometime.
